Much Anticipated Movie - Inkheart

Being a bookworm, I'm always interested to see how books translate into movies, especially those stories which are a superhit in their book format. The New Year is almost upon us and the one movie I'm really looking forward to seeing is Brendan Fraser's new film, Inkheart which is based on the best selling trilogy by Cornelia Funke.

Inkheart is a family-friendly fantasty adventure that sends a father and daughter on a quest through worlds both real and imagined. It's in theaters nationwide on January 23th. Brendan Fraser is also a fave actor of mine and as such I'm eager to see how this book translates on-screen. It promises to be fun-filled fantasy adventure for all ages.

About the Book: One cruel night, Meggie's father, Mo, reads aloud from INKHEART, and an evil ruler named Capricorn escapes the boundaries of fiction, landing instead in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie's in the middle of the kind of adventure she thought only took place in fairy tales. Somehow she must master the magic that has conjured up this nightmare. Can she change the course of the story that has changed her life forever?

Inkheart is the first book in the trilogy, followed by Inkspell and InkDeath.

Here are some images from the movie to further intrigue you:

Get Free Photos!

I've blogged this before, but this is such a GOOD DEAL, that I had to blog it again today!

Snapfish has become my favorite place for getting all my photos printed. You can edit photos, share photos and videos with friends and family, and order digital prints for only 9¢ each every day! A Snapfish account is totally free, and you get 20 free prints just for trying it out. Plus, I get 20 free prints for referring you! That's right - win, win either way.

Here's the breakdown of my latest deal with them. Snapfish sent me a coupon code using which I could get 50 4x6 mail-order prints for only a penny each! That meant a total price of 50 cents. I also had a credit of 20 Free prints left over from my previous order. That brought down the total to 30 cents. I chose to have it mailed rather than pick up at a local store. And since I was in no great hurry, I chose the standard 3-5 days shipping which cost me $3.44. That plus the tax brought the total to $4.04.

50 prints @ 1cent each  = $0.50
20 free prints = -$0.20
--------------------------------------------
Total = $0.30
--------------------------------------------
Standard S&H = $3.44
Tax = $0.30
----------------------------------------------------
Overall cost for 50 4x6 prints = $4.04
----------------------------------------------------

Previously I'd have spent a minimum of $10 more by going to a conventional store to get my photos printed. That plus the money for the gas and the time spent in doing this errand would have brought up the total even more. Now, I can avoid all that and get all my photos printed and delivered to my home just by uploading photos that are already on my computer! So easy! But that's not all Snapfish does.

Go check out Snapfish today. With the holidays coming up, this is just too good a deal to pass up!

Unique Skins

What are Skins?

Short answer - they're products that transform the dull old faceplates of your electronic devices, rendering them new, trendy and always up-to-date. Something akin to how doll clothes can be changed for different occasions.

Whether you're looking to change the facade of your Cell phone, MP3 Players, Laptops, Bluetooth Headsets, Gaming Consoles, or other miscellaneous devices, Unique Skins is the site to go to! Their skins are made of a vinyl with a non permenant adhesive backing that is processionally cut to fit your device. What makes them so unique is that you are able to customize your own device with whatever kind of graphic, text or personal image you desire.

For my review, they sent me a laptop skin that I picked out of their wonderful choice of selections and then personalized it with my initial. The skin was pre-cut to my laptop's size. Installation was as easy as peeling it and then sticking it on top of my laptop.

Now, instead of a boring old black face, my laptop has a snazzy, bold new design that looks oh-so cool! I love how it gives new life to my laptop. And their rates are way affordable too.

So, get personalizing - get your device something uniquely its own from Unique Skins!

Clean Safely with Spot Shot

One of the biggest chores in my household is cleaning the carpet. I really hate this particular chore. That's because often times it feels like all my back-breaking labor results in a big fat zero. Zero elimination of unexpected stains, that is. After spending hours on my hands and knees, scrubbing, inhaling undoubtedly toxic fumes, I expect that pink (blue, brown, black - name your color) stain that appeared overnight (do I have stain poltergeists?!) to disappear. But they don't!

It's really frustrating, as I'm sure anyone who has ever cleaned a carpet, knows. Which is why I was excited when Mom Central came about with a new tour that fitted my needs exactly! It's for Spot Shot - the new NON-TOXIC, certified biodegradable and powerful carpet cleaner and odor eliminator created by that trusted name, WD-40.

We all recognize WD-40 Company as a name we can trust (who hasn't grabbed a can of WD-40 to fix a squeaky door hinge or get gum out of long hair?). Spot Shot continues this long tradition of superior product performance by permanently eliminating old and new stains, neutralizing smells through dual-odor eliminators, and incorporating anti-resoiling agents into your carpet to help prevent stains from returning. The newly reformulated Spot Shot is also non-toxic and is environmentally friendly - easy to appreciate, as more Moms want powerful but environmentally safe products that work.

WD-40 Company is also introducing Spot Shot Pet, formulated specifically for the safe, permanent removal of the most difficult pet stains and odors.  Non-toxic and biodegradable, Spot Shot Pet can safely treat carpets everywhere kids play and pets roam.

I got sent a demo kit to try out. It worked wonders on my carpet! Even stubborn stains that no other cleaning product had eliminated, faded almost out of sight when I used Spot Shot on them. Mind you, they didn't disappear completely (I doubt if even dynamite could do that!). But they did fade noticeably, or rather... they aren't as noticeable now! And unlike other carpet cleaners, it didn't leave behind it's own brand of smell or rather stink, on the carpet.

Most importantly, I can use it freely without worrying about me or my family coming in contact with a potentially deadly chemical. Now that's something I LOVE and I'm sure you will too!

Blazing Fast Broadband - HughesNet

What is Satellite Internet?

Something that’s personally helped my life a LOT is the switchover from Dial-up to Broadband, which is basically high speed internet. Key point is - not all Broadband are created equal.

Since an estimated 40% of North America isn’t reached by terrestrial broadband (ground-based, thus geographically limited) such as cable or DSL, experts agree no other fast internet coverage is as good as Satellite Internet. It isn’t reliant on any fixed lines or infrastructure and uses a satellite dish for connectivity, besides providing a tremendous area of coverage.

Introduction: HughesNet

Fast internet connection can be yours, even way out in the boondocks, via Hughes: Net, America's #1 choice for broadband by satellite. By combining the best of landline and wireless broadband technologies, state-of-the-art management systems, and more than 30 years of satellite communications experience, HughesNet delivers a high standard of broadband communication.

Broad Overview

You'll enjoy faster surfing, faster downloads and instant email access – all without tying up your phone line. And since its Satellite Internet broadband, HughesNet isn’t limited by geography. All the small satellite dish needs is a clear view of the southern sky! They use an advanced two-way satellite technology to give you a super fast, always on Internet connection, including the ability to network to multiple computers.

How HughesNet works

Choose the HughesNet plan that most suits you and simply place your order online or by phone. You don’t pay until your system is installed and activated. A certified HughesNet installer will set up a convenient appointment, and then come connect your computer to a satellite modem and link it to a satellite dish (antenna) that's typically mounted on the roof of your home. The satellite dish sends and receives information over the Internet and delivers it to your computer almost instantly.

Download Speeds and Plans

With download speeds ranging from 728 kbps to 2.5 Mbps, HughesNet also offers a suite of convenient connectivity solutions, be it business, home, enterprise or even a government agency.

They have FIVE great plans to choose from: Home, Pro, ProPlus, Elite, Elite Plus. Using the simple and easy-to-understand Plan Comparison Table, it’s easy to evaluate the comparative speeds. Further exploration will help potential customers view in-depth details of each service plan’s features, including payment options and other elective attributes.

One BIG PLUS is the $100 Mail-In Rebate which applies to each plan. Buy a new HughesNet satellite system and get it activated before 9/30/2008 to avail this great offer! Other common factors with regards to all plans are:

  • Installation and Satellite systems are included
  • 24/7 Live Technical Support
  • Free email accounts
  • Email Defense
  • Standard warranty

Payment Options

HughesNet now offers payment flexibility with two purchase options. With a lower monthly payment and no upfront or activation costs, customers can now enjoy high-speed Internet for as little as $0 Upfront and $79.99/month. This Plan is in addition to their Upfront Purchase Plan that lets customers get started for as little as $299.98 after $100 mail-in-rebate and $59.99/month. Both plans offer a 24 month warranty and require a 24 month commitment.

Best thing is you won’t be billed until your HughesNet system is installed and activated.

In Short

With Reliability, Speed and Service as their weapons, HughesNet has the knowledge and experience to help consumers and small businesses harness the full potential of the Internet.

Review - Periscope LED Bookcover Booklight

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing a unique book product, namely The Periscope LED book light in a book cover.

Now, being a bona fide bookworm and one who likes to read late into the night, I’ve gone through several book lights. While necessary for every bookworm, their ease of use isn’t always guaranteed. Most book lights clip on to the cover of the book you’re reading. This is fine if it’s a hardback where the hard cover is capable of holding the weight of the book light and its subsequent use. But most book lights generally fail when it comes to paperbacks. Add to this a bookmark and things get real dicey balance-wise. This is where the Periscope LED book light in a book cover comes in real handy. After reading the press release (below) I was really eager to try out this innovative product that’s now available in Barnes & Noble bookstores and website.

From the Press release -
The Periscope LED book light in a book cover comes for both hardcover and paperback books. It protects privacy while putting light where you want it without cords, clips or clutter. These Periscope products feature a LED book light, a book cover and a bookmark in a single lightweight unit.

Unlike other reading lights, the Periscope book light is always with the book you’re reading. Readers never have to search for or carry a separate light for the hardcover or paperback book they’re reading. Simply slip the book into the Periscope bookcover (there are separate covers for hardcover and mass market paperback books), pull up the retractable light that’s stored in the spine of the book cover and start reading in the dark! The Periscope adjustable twin, wide-angle LED light automatically turns on when the arm is extended and shuts off when collapsed into the cover. What’s more, because the light is totally adjustable, readers can put the reading light precisely where they want it for maximum reading comfort. And, because Periscope is battery powered by three AA batteries that deliver over 40 hours of continuous light, there are no cords or plugs to worry about.

The Periscope paperback book light in a bookcover fits all mass market sized soft cover books and carries a suggested retail price of $34.95. The Periscope hardcover book light in a book cover carries a suggested retail price of only $39.95 and accommodates best-seller hardcover, trade paperbacks, and Bibles. Both models come with a built-in bookmark and inside pockets to hold tickets or other travel documents. A mini travel AC adapter is available for both models for a suggested retail price of $14.95.

For more information about Periscope products, visit www.periscopelight.com
Review

I tried out the paperback version of this nifty product. This product is all that it claims to be and I’ve found it really useful for my night time reading. The light is really good and while I’d have preferred the brilliance toned down a little bit (a dimmer attachment perhaps), there’s no doubt that it makes reading easy and an out and out pleasure in a darkened atmosphere. I found the concept of a built-in retractable book light to be very appealing (not to mention space-saving) and it helps enormously when you don’t have to struggle to clip a book light to a easily-bent paperback cover and make sure it doesn’t fall off if you change positions or turn a page. The extendable arm gives it versatility and the adjustable head provides light at whichever angle’s convenient to you. In fact, just its name (periscope) says it all.

I’ve used book covers and I’ve used book lights. But this is the only product that I know of which combines the use and utilization of both. I found the book cover with its built-in pocket to be a boon for those times when you have a ticket or some such to store and also to hide the sometimes provocative covers of the novels I love to read. A fat paperback neatly fits in this bookcover and since the light is built in, I just have to pull up the arm for it to automatically switch on and use the built-in bookmark for when slumber claims me. The three AA batteries claim to deliver over 40 hours of continuous light, so no fumbling around for batteries every time you want to read at night and there’s also an AC travel adapter for direct power supply. And what is just terrific is that when traveling, I don’t have to put away the book and the light and the bookmark separately as they’re all built in one single bookcover! Just close it, and go.

In Short

What a simple yet brilliant concept. It makes my bookish heart sigh wistfully just thinking of how many more books I would have been able to read if only someone had come up with this product years earlier.

Book Review : The Girl Who Stopped Swimming

The Girl Who Stopped Swimming

Author: Joshilyn Jackson

Hardcover: 320 pages

Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (March 4, 2008)

Book Description

Laurel Gray Hawthorne needs to make things pretty, whether she's helping her mother make sure the literal family skeleton stays in the closet or turning scraps of fabric into nationally acclaimed art quilts. Her estranged sister Thalia, an impoverished Actress with a capital A, is her polar opposite, priding herself on exposing the lurid truth lurking behind middle class niceties.

While Laurel's life seems neatly on track--a passionate marriage, a treasured daughter, and a lovely home in suburban Victorianna--everything she holds dear is suddenly thrown into question the night she is visited by the ghost of a her 13-year old neighbor Molly Dufresne. The ghost leads Laurel to the real Molly floating lifelessly in the Hawthorne's backyard pool.

Molly's death is inexplicable--an unseemly mystery Laurel knows no one in her whitewashed neighborhood is up to solving. Only her wayward, unpredictable sister is right for the task, but calling in a favor from Thalia is like walking straight into a frying pan protected only by Crisco. Enlisting Thalia's help, Laurel sets out on a life-altering journey that triggers startling revelations about her family's guarded past, the true state of her marriage, and the girl who stopped swimming.

Richer and more rewarding than any story Joshilyn Jackson has yet written, yet still packed with Jackson's trademarked outrageous characters, sparkling dialogue, and defiantly twisting plotting, THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING is destined both to delight Jackson's loyal fans and capture a whole new audience.

Review

Compelling, haunting (no pun intended) and poignant are the words that come to mind when I try to sum up this novel. To put it simply, I loved it. However, I didn’t fall in love with it right away. In fact, I found it quite confusing to begin with. But my feelings gradually changed as I got deeper and deeper into the story and had better understanding of the characters. Everything in this Joshilyn Jackson story leads up to, revolves around and hinges on solving Molly’s death. And yet, it’s the characters, more than anything else, who constitute the true mystery in this novel.

I didn’t really get the protagonist, Laurel, at first. She was a mystery to me, as much as the corpse floating in her pool was a mystery to Laurel. Over the course of the story, I got to discover how Laurel’s seemingly perfect life isn’t perfect at all. Although Laurel is this famous maker of innovative quilts with an affluent cookie-cutter perfect life in the suburbs with her computer nerd of a husband and a precocious daughter, her entire life has been and continues to be haunted by DeLop.

This seedy and impoverished former mining community is where Laurel’s mother hails from and to whose faults that lady has conveniently blinded herself from. Although Laurel despises this willful blindness in her mother, Molly’s death forcibly makes her comprehend how without realizing it, she herself has adopted her mother’s attitude. Whether this results in a tragedy like her mother’s did once before, makes for some very tense and expectant reading.

Another main character is that of Thalia, Laurel’s older sister who’s a born-actress. Although this character is referenced to quite frequently, she doesn’t put in an actual appearance until well into the story. By then, I’d read such conflicting descriptions of her as to be quite befuddled as to what to expect. What she turns out to be is more than expected and yet less. Confusing? You bet! But that’s exactly what Thalia is – an enigma, as much as Laurel, and yet different. The sisters are polar opposites and yet their shared past, their not-so salubrious history binds them together and gives them something in common – a tragedy.

Haunted by memories, Laurel buries herself in a quiet and boring suburban life while Thalia deals with it by celebrating the ugliness of life and indulging in outrageous behavior. This makes her ideal for investigating Molly’s death for only she can burrow under the social fa├žade of the Stepford-like life in suburban Victorianna and strip it away to reveal the rot underneath. And so Laurel invites her over little realizing that Thalia will begin her work by peeling away the anesthetized cover of her own marriage.

The strength of Jackson’s writing lies as much in her powerful and lifelike characterizations as it does in evocative storytelling. As a result, every character in this book, no matter how minor, is of interest. In the end, I identified with them all, even the dead girl and the cold mother … except for the Uncle. Without revealing the story, suffice to say that I just didn’t get why he behaved the way he did (was he sick, or enacting some revenge against Laurel’s mother, or both? or was it quite something else?).

Throughout the story, the author raises expectations of how things might turn out to be or how a character might behave under given circumstances. And every time, without fail, predictability fails. Or at least, it did for me. Every time I thought I had a handle on things than Jackson yanked away the figurative rug beneath my feet. This I enjoyed, more than anything else.

And lest I forget, the pivotal mystery of the girl who stopped swimming is beautifully maintained throughout the length of the book. And only towards the very end is the shocking truth revealed. 'Masterful' is the only word to describe how Jackson ekes out the suspense without making it tedious or predictable.

In Short

Although fellow bookworms had strongly recommended this author to me, this is the very first Joshilyn Jackson book I’ve ever read. But it’s certainly not going to be the last. I loved this story and impatiently count the days until her next book comes out.

Kudos for a superb story, Joshilyn!
