Have you heard of Soapnuts? They've often been called Nature's Soaps.
Growing on a tree called Sapindus, the soap nut is found in the jungles of India, Indonesia, Nepal and other South Asian countries. They have a natural substance called Saponin which comes out when the soap nut comes in contact with water and it acts just like soap.
I've long used soapnuts to wash my long hair and I can personally vouch that they make excellent shampoo! Just leave 3-5 soapnuts to soak in warm water and after a while the water gets turned into soapy water, which you then use just like ordinary shampoo.
Soapnuts can be used as laundry soap. But until recently, I didn't know that Soapnuts can be used as laundry soap. Soapnuts are harvested, de-seeded, and then dried in the sun — and that’s it — they're ready for you to use in your wash! A few nuts can be placed in a cotton drawstring bag in with a washload and reused several times. They are organically grown and are chemical-free, and they are incredibly gentle on clothes AND skin. They are especially great for those with sensitive skin — including babies and those that suffer from allergies, eczema, and psoriasis! They’re totally biodegradeable, so they’re better for the environment than regular detergent, and they’re antimicrobial, so they’re even good for septic and greywater systems!
reuse ... great for sensitive skin ... biodegradable ... gentle Laundry Tree was kind enough to send me some, which I put in the wash immediately. And since it was the weekend, our big sized washer was filled to capacity. I just cut open the package Laundry Tree sent, took out 4 to 6 Soapnuts per instructions (they didn't smell good, btw - a trivial thing as it turned out), put them in the cotton drawstring bag thoughtfully provided and tossed them all in the wash. That's it! No soap, no nothing. Just plain soapnuts. I had read others rave about them, but I still had my doubts - could these tiny things really wash this humongous load? perhaps I should have waited to use them for a smaller, weekday wash?
As it turned out, my worries were groundless. They washed the whole load, and did so wonderfully. Oh, and the small bag conveniently slid to the bottom of the washer where I found it after I'd unloaded the thing completely. Most of the stains were gone, the clothes were clean, there was no residual smell, no soapy feel. I repeat, the clothes were clean. And what do you know? I can use the same bag for 4 or 6 washes more!! I love it.
Soaps made by natureSoaps made by nature - now, what could be better than that, right? So head on over to Laundry Tree and buy your soapnuts today! One more thing - since the soapnuts leave the clothes clean but with no smell any all, Laundry Tree offers a variety of essential and fragrant oils which you can add with the soapnuts to give your clothes some scent.
