Poingo - Review and Giveaway

Created - 11/25/2008

Are you having trouble deciding which toy to buy this Holiday season? There are choice galore, but I generally like those which combine learning with fun. And that's where POINGO comes in!

PhotobucketWhat Is it?
Poingo™ (www.mypoingo.com) is the next generation of interactive books. Using the pen-shaped Poingo to touch pictures or text on a page, kids ages 3 and up can bring their favorite characters to life with stories, songs, sounds and games. There's nothing to download or plug in! Just turn it on and your kid is ready to go.

PhotobucketHow it Works
Poingo uses a mini-scanner to “read” microscopic symbols throughout a Poingo-enabled book. You can’t see the symbols, but Poingo can. The symbols trigger Poingo to play words, music, sound effects, and interactive games – such as matching or “look and find” activities. Kids use Poingo to help Nemo swim through a ring of fire before time runs out or, through an onboard speaker, hear Cars’ characters zoom.

My Review
My toddler is at that stage where he's repeating (or at least, trying to!) everything we say. I happily introduced him to Poingo, even though he's way younger than the recommended age of 3-7. After he learnt to grasp the pen and point it at the words, the rest was a breeze! He was really astounded by the pen that spoke. With bright colors and fun stories he's already familiar with (Disney's Cars and Nemo were the two oversized hardcover books in the set we were sent to review), Poingo held his attention for a long time and he had a great deal of fun pointing and then repeating the words after it. The pen also makes sounds effects at appropriate points. Such as: a car roaring in the Cars story and so on. That was fodder for additional enjoyment! There's even an option to connect the pen to headphones, but I didn't try that out as I enjoyed hearing the book as much as my toddler did.

My Recommendation
It's a good way to combine learning and fun, so I'd say Poingo is a must-buy this Holiday season!

More Information
Poingo is powered by two AAA batteries (included), comes with a USB cable for easy connection to a home computer, and features a headphone jack for quiet play. It's enabled by SDX Interactive™ technology, which can transform almost any type of printed content into a multimedia experience. Poingo features 256 megabytes of internal memory capacity that will store more than 50 different books simultaneously.

With the purchase of a starter set, the interactive content for all six launch titles is already loaded into Poingo's memory – no downloading is necessary, so kids can start using Poingo right away. The starter set retails for approximately $34.99 with individual books selling for approximately $9.99 each.

Poingo is available in the children’s book departments at Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, Walmart, Sam’s Clubs, Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Clubs, and at www.discoverpoingo.com.
