Being part of a large, globally scattered family means I'm often on the internet, chatting and trying to keep in touch with people I've not seen in ages. And now that I'm a Mom, I'm especially keen to keep this going as it's the only way Kiddo's going to know the family he's now a part of.
But chatting, especially video chatting often means some kind of software download and when you have people on different computers, peripherals and operating systems, this is not an easy task.
Enter Tokbox - a new service that lets you talk with your friends over live video.
Tokbox is free and easy to use; you simply sign up on tokbox.com and they provide you with a link. When you want to talk with someone, simply give them the link - they click and you chat or you can click on their name from your buddy list and call them directly. With nothing to download, no costs or prepaid minutes, and complete privacy control, Tokbox solves a number of the problems we all have staying in touch. Plus – video is so much more fun than simply talking. Tokbox also has a wonderful Video email facility that lets you send video messages to friends and family.
Another great thing about Tokbox is that you can put it on your social network profile, blog, or personal webpage. Anyone can come to your page and see a "Push to Talk" button to click and connect to you in real time using live video and audio.
Initially, I had some problems with using Tokbox. I could see and hear my relatives in another country, but they could only see me, but not hear. The CEO of the company, Nick Triantos himself was kind enough to discuss my issues and suggest a solution. Since the video facility uses Adobe Flash, it's important that both parties have the latest version, which it seemed in my case, was not the case. The situation's now been resolved.
I'd highly recommend this service to anyone who likes to video chat or video email. The quality is excellent and the ease of use is simply brilliant!
