Earn Your Stripes with Kelloggs!

PhotobucketWinter's not yet over, and I'm already longing for Summer! Long days of working in the garden and taking Kiddo to the park or going to watch a soccer match. But have you noticed how many of these soccer fields have fallen into a profound state of disrepair? With the economy being what it is, many towns are being forced to budget cuts which just don't let them continue to maintaining these fields - forget additions or improvements!

It's very sad as these fields are just not for the kids, but also for a wonderful meeting place for parents and communities in general. A place to meet, talk, eat, share and have fun, in the outdoors, in fresh air. What better way to spend an evening, right?!

Embracing this spirit of making a difference, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Earn Your Stripes program has initiated a call-to-action for a national field renovation program that kicks off this coming Super Bowl Sunday with a commercial entitled "Plant a Seed."

The ad focuses on the role we all play in building stronger communities and making a difference in kids' lives. Because the Earn Your Stripes program is about inspiring kids to be their very best, "Plant a Seed" shows that before anyone can earn a single stripe, someone has to plant a seed and help give kids places to realize their promise and potential.

The field renovation initiative will make over approximately 50 fields across the United States to help provide better places for families to stay active. Through this program, fields will once again become central and vibrant places of activity and community in cities and towns across the country.

One more, but very worthwhile reason, to watch out for those SuperBowl commercials, I'm thinking! So, don't forget to watch it, come back here and leave your thoughts in the comments. Go Kelloggs!

Green Works Natural Wipes

From my previous post about Clorox Green Works, you know how much I love it! It's not only safe, but a wonderful way to help save the environment as well!

With that in mind, I'm excited to tell you about Green Works' latest product that's coming (or already has) to stores nationwide - Green Works Natural Biodegradable Cleaning Wipes, a quick and simple way to clean naturally with the cleaning power of Clorox.  The new Wipes are made from 100% cellulose fibers and derived from renewable farm grown trees.  Like all Green Works products, they are formulated using biodegradable ingredients, are packaged in recyclable canisters and not tested on animals.

I've personally tried them out on my kitchen counters (even kitchen floors), bathroom counters etc to mop up spills and been very satisfied with their performance. I just open the canister and pull out the wipes, just like tissues. No mess, no fuss! The added advantage is that I don't have to spray the dirt with something and then wipe it. Which means lesser chances of my lightning-quick toddler touching it and maybe having an allergic reaction. Also, since it's derived from trees, I feel it's safer to use around my youngster than those other strong chemicals out there.

The new Wipes work on grease, grime, dirt, soils and messes, and are safe to use on multiple surfaces throughout the kitchen and bathroom including counters, appliances, stainless steel, sealed granite, chrome, cooktop hoods, sinks and toilets.

Make the change - try out  Green Works today!

PS - Between January 15 and February 28, 2009, individuals can nominate eco-friendly community projects for a Green Heroes grant by submitting a photo and short essay about the project for consideration online at Each winner - or "Green Hero" - will receive a $10,000 grant to help their eco-friendly community projects grow and flourish!

Stop & Shop your way to a Healthy Lifestyle

What was your New Year's Resolution? I just have one standard one - to be healthy and happy. And Eating Healthy is the way I choose to do this. But it's not an easy task, especially once you hit the grocery store where the choices are enormous!

Thanks to Mom Central, I came to know about Stop & Shop Supermarket's Healthy Ideas, a new on-shelf symbol that helps customers easily identify foods that fit into a healthy lifestyle.

To take the guesswork out of making healthy food choices, Stop & Shop has placed the Healthy Ideas symbol on 3000+ items and shelf tags throughout its stores. The symbol highlights foods that have less fat, saturated fat and sodium. It also helps to ensure that the foods we select include a healthful amount of at least one nutrient, such as fiber, whole grains, calcium and minerals.

The power of Healthy Ideas lies in the strength of its criteria which was developed by a team of registered dietitians and reviewed by an advisory panel of physicians and nutrition experts, including Dr. George Blackburn, associate director of the Division of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School. Research played a critical role in the development of the symbol, which uses the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the USDA Food Pyramid ( and the USDA/FDA's definition of healthy as a basis for its foundation.

Visit Stop & Shop to get a variety of ideas about how to transform traditional family favorites into healthy choices. Check out the Healthy Ideas Recipes, learn all about allergens and food safety and much more. Get your children involved and make them more aware with Stop and Shop's store tours! There's also a convenient store locator to help find your nearest Stop & Shop.

Truvia Natural Sweetner

If you think Artificial Sweeteners are healthy, think again!

I've always been a bit skeptical about putting artificial anything in my food and as such have stayed away from artificial sweeteners like Splenda. It's true that Artificial sweeteners help cut down calories. But, studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can also stimulate high insulin levels in your body, which again can promote fat storage. So, how healthy are they ultimately?

You may ask, what are the alternatives then? Is there a natural, zero calorie alternative to artificial sweeteners? Surprisingly, there is!

Truvia natural sweetener is a Stevia-based sweetener and thanks to the folks at Cargill, it can be found at your local grocery store nationwide!

Stevia is a shrub in the chrysanthemum family that is native to northeastern Paraguay. First discovered by the country's natives, the plant has been grown, harvested and used in South America to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years.

Truvia rebiana, the main ingredient in Truvia natural sweetner, comes from the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf and is a high-purity sweetener that is consistent in quality and taste. Cargill has spent the past five years developing the product to its specifications and working to produce the ingredient on a commercial scale and the FDA recently approved its safety.

I've used Truvia for 4-5 days now and I'm happy to say it's been a good experience. There's not a lot of after-taste and overall I've not felt much of a difference between this and real sugar.

So, for those of you like me, who prefer a natural solution, I urge you to try out Truvia.

New Preserve Kitchenware - Review

I'm a fan of recycling. That much you probably already know from my previous blog post about the recycled but oh-so good Preserve Toothbrush. I feel it's important to do my little part in cleaning up this Earth.

Using the same philosophy that Preserve applied to their wonderful Recycline toothbrush, their kitchenware products – mixing bowls, colanders, food storage containers and cutting boards – are created from 100% recycled plastic and 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Their modern and colorful Preserve kitchenware is the environmentally-friendly way to cook, prep and store a family’s healthy meals. Equally inspiring is the line’s versatility and durability combined with stylishness that a must for any kitchen.

Which is why I was excited when the makers of the Preserve Toothbrush contacted me about reviewing a product from their new Preserve kitchenware product line, which will (and probably already has) debut at your local Target store this January.

I was sent the 3.5 quart dishwasher-safe Preserve Colander in Milk white color, which is made from 100% recycled plastic and is recyclable in communities with #5 recycling. It also comes in Berry Blue, Apple Green, and Ripe Tomato colors. I've used it regularly for 2 weeks+ and put in the dishwasher more than once. It's easy to grip, drains fast and the color and the surface of the colander are still as good as new. Overall, the quality of this product is simply excellent,  and there is just no way of telling it's made from recycled plastic. I just love it! I can't wait to go to my local Target and check out the rest of this wonderful line of kitchenware, especially the Preserve cutting board which is made with Forest Stewardship Council certified Paperstone!!

Here are a few thoughts on what makes the Preserve products special:
  • All products are made from 100% recycled #5 plastic (just like their toothbrushes, razors and tableware) or 100% post-consumer recycled paper
  • Preserve is powered by the recycling efforts of individuals and companies collecting #5 plastic – such as yogurt cups and other common household containers – via Preserve’s Gimme 5 program (
  • All products are BPA-free, made in the USA, and dishwasher-safe
  • A selection of the Preserve Kitchenware line will be launched at your local Target store in January 2009
  • The prices for these select products are:
    • Large colander: $11.99
    • Mixing bowl set of 3: $21.99
    • Large plastic cutting board: $12.99
    • Small plastic cutting board: $8.99
Something green and eco-friendly to begin the New Year with - what could be better?! So check out the new Preserve kitchenware product line today - either online or at your local Target! Don't forget to come back here and share your experience!
