Ringling Bros And Barnum & Bailey - Tickets and Discount!

Created - 2/24/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketWhen I think of my childhood, one of the most vivid memories I have is that of visiting the Big Top. The razzle dazzle, the glitter, the crowd and of course, the astonishing performances have remained in my memory even now. Apparently I'm not the only one - a national survey found that 88% of Moms regarded Ringling Bros.® as a "not to be missed" childhood experience!

And those who've had the pleasure of checking out the newest production from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey in Orlando, FL, were blown away by the energy, music, dancing and really outstanding illusions found in ZING ZANG ZOOM. The show features magical Zingmaster Alex Ramon, who had the crowd gasping in disbelief at the grand illusions that he performed, and the amazing interactive family experience merged with traditional circus acts was remarkable.

However, with the economy posing a challenge for many families, the value of a night out at Ringling Bros. is high, as the experience includes the All Access Pre-show, a fun opportunity to meet circus performers and dress up in clown costumes, which happens one hour before each performance.

Thanks to Mom Central, I'm pleased to extend to my readers these following special family offers:

The discount code for Ringling Bros Circus Code: MOM

Offer #1: Get 4 tickets for just $44 by entering the code "MOM" at select ticketing channels**. Offer good on all performances, minimum purchase of 4 tickets required; additional tickets above 4 can be purchased at $11 each. Offer not valid on Circus Celebrity Seating, Front Row and VIP seating or combinable with other offers. Other Restrictions May Apply.

Offer #2: A select amount of Front Row and VIP seats have been reserved for you to buy before they go on sale to the public - just enter the code "MOM" when purchasing those seats.

Dates and cities where families can use the national MOM discount code this spring are as follows:

Jack & Lily Shoes - Review and Giveaway

Created - 2/23/2009 124 Comments

Recently while visiting some of my favorite Mommy Blogs, I came across a mention of Jack & Lily Shoes. The name first caught my eye and I made a mental note to check them out later. And when I visited their site, the shoes held me spellbound! Just take a look below :

Aren't they just yummy?! The cleanly laid out site with its pastel shades made me feel right at home and I had a pleasant time browsing their myriad selection which is neatly divided into :
I also came to know about the interesting features of their shoes, some of which are:
  • Jack & Lily baby shoes are handcrafted using premium grade,'Lamb Touch' leather and skid resistant suede soles that allows developing feet to learn balance and build strength.
  • Jack & Lily shoes are naturally durable.
  • The gently elasticized ankle helps keep babies socks on and add extra warmth.
  • Jack & Lily shoes are machine washable.
I was so impressed that I wrote to ask if they could send me a pair of review and maybe even sponsor a Giveaway! And guess what, they agreed!

Kiddo was sent this handsome Sport / brown & cream pair. He wore it proudly to a birthday party over the weekend where his feet drew many a Momma's eye who kept asking me where I'd gotten that "nice", "fun", "charming" pair. Made me feel quite the trendsetter, they did! He had fun with them and I could rest easy knowing he was not only safe wearing them, but that they were very comfy as well. Good fit and good support mean a lot when it comes to growing young feet and Jack & Lily Shoes ensure that.

Eye Buy Direct - Review & Giveaway

Created - 2/21/2009 18 Comments

It's been just a few months since we went to get prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses for Hubby at a well-known retailer. Which is where we always go, even though they're expensive. But their frames are good, as is their service, which is why we've stuck with them for so long. However, even with insurance, this time our out of pocket expenses came to well over $500. Now that's a hefty chunk of change, especially in times like these. We had so many other expenses that I deferred buying my own glasses, since I don't need to wear mine all the time.

Which is why when the Family Review Network offered me an opportunity to get Glasses for review from the online retailer, EyeBuyDirect.com, I was really excited! EyeBuyDirect.com is the world's leading online optical retailer offering full prescription eyeglasses for as little as $7.95. Their vision is "to empower vision for anyone, anywhere".

My Experience : They have a number of frames available, sorted out neatly in different categories, according to gender, color and price.

To be frank, the hardest time I had was choosing which frame to choose from among the great variety they have. They were all so good too. I finally narrowed it down to 5 choices, but just couldn't make up my mind. So I used their very convenient "EYETRY Now" feature wherein I uploaded a picture of myself and virtually put my frame selections on my face to see which suited me the best.

I confess, that process was such fun, I tried not just my 5 final choices, but nearly all the women's frames they had, just to see how I'd look in frames I'd never even think of wearing otherwise. Good thing I did, for I eventually ended up with a frame that hadn't made it my top 5, just because it looked so good on my face! They're not the kind I usually go for, which was kind of a surprise!

I knew the kind of lens I wanted, which made that part of the choice a bit easier, since there again EyeBuyDirect has some good choices.

Then came the tough part - the putting in of the optical prescription details for the lenses on my order. Here again, using EyeBuyDirect's helpful explanation, I was able to navigate my way through the obscure jargon of optical details. Then I chose my Eye & Lens Protection details (anti-glare, etc).

Finally, I was done! The glasses arrived about a week and a half later, in a sleek and transparent case, with the glasses themselves cozily nestled in a supersoft lens cloth. I eagerly put them on and they fit just perfect! I look good in them and they cost way, WAY less than than what I usually pay at the conventional store. I've used them on and off since and so far, so GOOD!

I think I know where I'll be going the next time Hubby or I need glasses - EyeBuyDirect.com. They also have an option for opening an account with them and storing your prescription which makes it even easier the next time around.

To quote Forbes Magazine - EyeBuyDirect is "an efficient and easy-to-use prescription eyeglasses site, that provides fashionable, quality eyeglass frames and prescription lenses starting at only $7.95; significantly lower than the leading eyeglass chains".

So the next time you're in the market for new glasses, check out EyeBuyDirect.com and put some green back in your pocket!

Nature's Source - Review and Giveaway

Created - 2/17/2009 94 Comments

PhotobucketAs regular readers know, I'm a big fan of all things natural. This is especially true when it comes to cleaning products. I myself am sensitive to the strong smells and have had adverse reactions caused by the strong chemical cleaners that can be generally found on supermarket shelves. But I've become more careful in this aspect as my little boy is even more sensitive than me!

So, when I was offered an opportunity to test a product from Nature’s Source - the new line of natural cleaning products from SC Johnson, I was excited to accept!
Plant-based, Biodegradable Cleaners
The main reason was these products use plant-based and biodegradable cleaners. And they have the cleaning power of Windex and Scrubbing Bubbles, brand names people already know and trust! They clean naturally and effectively, leaving nothing behind but a fresh scent.

The cleaners are :

  1. more than 99 percent natural
  2. packaged in recyclable bottles
  3. partly produced by renewable energy from a local landfill
  4. And recognized for safer chemistry by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program.
I was sent Nature Source's Natural Bathroom Cleaner to try out. Both Hubby and I were excited, since the product arrived just as we had planned to scrub the bathroom from top to bottom and we both hate the chemical cleaner we currently have. We usually are forced to put on masks and gloves, but this time we didn't!

That's because the ingredients of Natural Bathroom Cleaner consist of :
  • Plant-Based Cleaning Agent - which means, the ingredients come from fruits, vegetables and grains as well as trees, herbs and other types of plants.
  • Lactic Acid - which is produced from the breakdown of natural sugars in fruits, vegetables and a variety of other sources. It also happens to be amazing at removing hard-water deposits
  • Purified Water - which is water that has had minerals and other impurities removed.
The cleaner was sprayed all over, and we scrubbed - like we usually do. All minus the horrible fumes and itchy feelings! And before we knew it, we'd said goodbye to dirt, grime, soap scum and hard-water deposits with this natural cleaner from the folks at Scrubbing Bubbles. As an added bonus, our bathroom was filled with an light, airy scent, eons better and different from the harsh, artifical scent that the cleaners we usually use have. The cleaner attacks and loosens stubborn soil with the power of lactic acid, making it easy to keep the bathroom sparkling and smelling fresh.

I loved using this product and I'm sure you will too. Luckily, here's a chance for you to score some freely!

Parenting Style

Created - 2/16/2009 4 Comments

Recently on TwitterMoms, and courtesy of Care.com, an interesting question was asked - What’s the rudest comment from a stranger you have ever gotten about your parenting style?

PhotobucketUnless one stands in a Parent's shoes and does the actual parenting of a particular child, in my opinion, that person has no right to criticize said Parent. Ever since I became a parent I've been getting my share of rude, obnoxious etc comments. Some from total strangers, some from friends and family and from people you know. While those from strangers come as a shock, those from family and friends hurt as well as shock.

One of the rudest comments I got was from a guy - yes, a guy - at a store. As an infant my son had tiny fingers and sharp nails. I was too scared to cut them for fear of cutting his fingers and so let them grow until they'd grown visibly long. In the meantime, to save him from scratching himself, I put on those cute little baby mittens on him. One day, I was rushing to pick up something and couldn't find those mittens. As a quick substitute, I put on some soft white cotton socks of PhotobucketKiddo's that were fresh out of the wash. He looked cute in them! I'm standing there in the long, l-o-n-g checkout queue, and this guy breaks line to come to me and asks about them. I explain it to him, but I don't think he heard me. He just kept staring at me and then loudly asks if I'm a fan of boxing! Boxing?!! I was flummoxed! Words wouldn't come out of my mouth! He takes advantage of my open-mouthed state and proceeds to tell me that it's wrong of me to start foisting my tastes and interests on a young child, especially something as potentially lethal as Boxing and that as a Mother I should know better. WHAT THE *&#$&#$&#? I think to myself. I continue to be silent, this time with Fury! He then walks off to the next aisle and proceeds to tell the people there all about the "strange woman who's forcing her son to...". I tuned out at that time. I'm one of those people who always go silent when angry. Which was good thing here as otherwise there might been some BIG unpleasantness there.

PhotobucketOne of the other things I've faced constant criticism about from people I know is about another Parenting decision we've made. We're Vegetarians, and are bringing up our kids in that same manner. From our Pediatrician to our friends, anyone who is not a vegetarian (and very, very few are) and who hears of this is shocked! One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that if one doesn't eat meat, one doesn't get the required amounts of protein / nutrition. That's simply not the case! Food stuffs like vegetables, lentils, sprouts, rice and many other items are chock full of the good stuff and contain very little of the bad stuff.

PhotobucketAnd here's my third and favorite (NOT) criticism. This one has come from Family members and again is something that really hurts. One of the things as a Parent I always try and follow is to follow through on anything I state. For example, if I tell Kiddo to move his tricycle from the driveway or I won't let him have it the rest of the afternoon, then I mean it. If he doesn't do it, I take it away and the next time he knows to listen to me. But Family members (I won't say who, but you all know, right?) have been known to call me "hard" and "disciplinarian" when I do this. It hurts, but I keep silent here as well. Not just because I'm furious, but because the people who make those comments had a different style of parenting and while what they did worked with their child, it doesn't always work with mine! That's the crucial difference and one that I hope, they'll realize that for themselves sooner or later.

Our job as parents is not to do what is the easiest but what is in the children's best interests.

How about you? If you've ever faced something like this, do share!

See Kai Run - Review and Giveaway

Created - 2/12/2009 77 Comments

I've previously had the privilege of reviewing the fantastic shoes that See Kai Run offers. You can read my reviews here and here. Now you know why I'm just one of the countless parents who've come to regard See Kai Run shoes as synonymous with Style, Comfort and Safety! Their designs are sophisticated and classic with modern twists sprinkled throughout.

Recently they came out with their Spring collection (see some of them pictured above) in the following lines –
  • Smaller: soft-soled booties, sized 0-18 months
  • See Kai Run first walkers, sizes 3-9
  • Shoes for bigger kids from their sister company Eleven, sizes 9-1.

I was sent Maverick and Anne (pictured immediately above) for review. My son was immediately oohing and aahing over his Mavericks! A new twist on a classic. This trainer is olive and cream with metallic gold and black accents. Perfect for special occasions or just kicking it around town. The Anne, on the other hand, is a pair of shoes almost as sweet as she is. Anne features her favorite color, pink, with cream criss-cross straps on top for an instant favorite. It's just too cute for words.

Both of them have these common, excellent qualities :
  • Handcrafted from butter-soft sheepskin leather
  • Padded collars for extra comfort
  • Adjustable Velcro closures make shoes easy to get on and ensure a great fit
  • Breathable leather insole and lining
They also have some unique individual features:
Now this last feature of the Maverick is something that's not commonly found and Kiddo actually enjoys wearing these shoes as they're so roomy and comfy. Probably feels like he's not wearing them at all, as otherwise no sooner than shoes go his feet, than his busy little fingers are eagerly pulling them off. I repeat, that wasn't the case here. Not only did he show no inclination to throw them off, the sturdy velcro straps held them securely on his active little feet as they flitted busily from indoors to outdoors, on all kinds of surfaces, with nary a hitch in his stride. Anne, on the other hand, is soft, sweet and just right for those little newborn feet. Soft and padded for added comfort, with breathable lining to ensure a little to no-sweat use.

See Kai Run and Smaller promote healthy development of babies' and children's feet with their ultra-flexible soles, soft leather and wide toe box. Best thing, their footwear meets the American Podiatric Medical Association's rigorous standards for foot health and functionality and has been awarded the APMA's prestigious Seal of Acceptance.

Now, for the really exciting part!

Hear Through Your Bottom

Created - 2/11/2009 0 Comments

NO, I'm not kidding. I read this article and just had to share!

From ItExaminer.com:

Scientists have developed a chair which will help people hear using their bottoms.

Ryerson University's Centre of Learning Technology and the Science of Music, Auditory Research and Technology Lab have developed chairs that translate music into a series of tactile sensations.

The vibrating Emoti-Chairs analyses sound frequencies using a similar mapping to the human ear. These are then translated into mechanical responses – including motion, vibration, and blasts of air on the face.

Scientists hope that it can give deaf people the chance to experience music for the first time.

They are also interested to see if they can spot the difference between Beethoven, Mozart and popular beat combos like the Beatles and ZZ Top.

A concert is being planned with the musician's sound gear being linked into the chairs.
Better hope that no one wants to get up and dance otherwise they will not hear a thing.    The chance of having people hear through their bottoms is a boon for artists like Craig David and James Blunt who have been singing out of theirs for ages. X

Importance of Playing

Created - 2/09/2009 0 Comments

Scientific American magazine has a good article on why it is so important for children to have free, imaginative play.

Bullet points from the top of article:
  • Childhood play is crucial for social, emotional and cognitive development.
  • Imaginative and rambunctious “free play,” as opposed to games or structured activities, is the most essential type.
  • Kids and animals that do not play when they are young may grow into anxious, socially maladjusted adults.
