Combining the best action/thriller elements with surprising humor and an iconic new breed of espionage, the second season heats up as blacklisted spy, Michael Westen hones his unique skills for new clientele. My Thoughts - When Burn Notice first started, I was intrigued and the season one had me really singing its praises. But after a while it felt like the stories were getting a bit repetitive and I looked forward to Season 2 with misgivings. As it turned out, this second season cemented this series' reputation for being top-notch in both acting and action. The Bank Robbery episode in particular epitomizes what this series means to me and its one which I can never get enough of! The instructional and explanatory voice over never fails to entertain and engage while the wry humor and the conversational plotting are just plain awesome.

My Recommendation - If you've never seen this series, then I'd recommend you start! And if you are a fan, well... stop reading this and go watch this Dvd already!

Stealing Lincoln's Body - DVD Review and Giveaway

 Stealing Lincoln's Body

I always knew Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. I never knew there had been an attempt to steal his body! Did you?

One of the strangest, most intriguing, and yet almost unknown episodes in American history unfolded in 1876, eleven years after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A band of Chicago counterfeiters hatched a plot to steal the President’s body from its tomb outside Springfield, Illinois, and hold it for a ransom of $200,000. A paid informant told the newly formed Secret Service. When both the police and the criminals showed up at the cemetery on the appointed night, the scheme was foiled.

This feature-length special from HISTORY™ explores the peculiar confluence of historical trends and cultural movements that prompted the crime: the birth of counterfeiting, the growth of embalming, and the influence of secret societies in American life, among others. But above all, the story shows how important this beloved President remained to a public so unprepared for his violent death in 1865.

Startling and informative, this is one of those tales you have to see to believe.

Kiddie Kangaroo - Review

I'm often on the go with my kids and the car is like a second home to them. The baby is generally quiet in the infant seat but my active little toddler is always bouncing (figuratively speaking, of course!) in his. One of the things that concerns me while driving is his constant asking for stuff :

Him: "Mommy, I dropped my sippy cup (or sunglasses or cap or book or ...). I want it - NOW!
Me: "No, honey,  Mommy's driving. I'll get it later, when the car's not moving".
Him: WAIL...SCREAM...SCREECH!!

So either I have to stop the car or try to reach behind with one hand while keeping  His seat itself has no cup holders or pockets or anything to keep his stuff in. So I got one of those behind-the-car-seat organizers for him to put all his stuff in, but with the seat belt on, that's generally out of his reach. I was looking for a solution online when I came across an interesting site, My Precious Kid. They have a lot of useful products, including the versatile Kiddie Kangaroo!

PhotobucketThe Kiddie Kangaroo is a travel accessory designed for birth to kindergarten use on car seats, infant carriers and strollers. Not only does it have adjustable pockets, but its waterproof material fits along the seat and up the back to help keep it clean. The pockets on each side have Velcro strips to be placed where needed for best fit and offer a Velcro divider that can divide the pockets for specialized storage or folded flat to allow for larger items such as books and toys. The Pockets are also washable or just wipe clean and are easy to add and remove.

It gives my toddler a place to keep everything within his reach, allowing me to keep my hands safely on the steering wheel and my eyes on the road. It is also available for strollers of all sizes. Practical, very useful and highly versatile, the Kiddie Kangaroo is a great buy at $19.99!

DVD Review - Nobel Son

Synopsis:
On the eve of Barkley Michaelson's father receiving the Nobel Prize, Barkley is kidnapped and the requested ransom is the $2,000,000 in Nobel Prize money. When his father refuses to pay it starts a venomous tale of familial dysfunction, lust, betrayal and ultimately revenge. Featuring an ensemble cast starring Alan Rickman, Bryan Greenberg, Mary Steenburgen, Shawn Hatosy, Bill Pullman, Ted Danson, Danny Devito and Eliza Dushku.

DVD Specs:
The Nobel Son DVD is presented in widescreen format (2.35:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Surround sound and English and Spanish subtitles. Special features include:

• Commentary with director/producer Randall Miller, writer/producer Jody Savin, musician Paul Oakenfold, cinematographer Mike Ozier and actors Brian Greenberg and Eliza Dushku.
• Deleted scenes with optional commentary from director/producer Randall Miller and writer/producer Jody Savin
o Barkley Stalks Thaddeus
o Barkley Freaks Out Thaddeus
o City Hall in the Asylum
• Alternate ending sequence

My Thoughts:  I'd read a lot of conflicting reports on the web about this movie - some liked it, some absolutely hated it. That left me intrigued and I was eager to watch and judge this movie for myself. Once the movie was over, I understood why people felt that way. Like others before me, I just couldn't decide whether I loved it or hated it.

What I liked mainly was the intriguing plot (and how it twists and turns!) and how the movie ended. What I didn't like was the weak acting and the general chaos of the narrative. The movie is sprawling and there are too many elements and characters and not all of them are utilized or brought together cohesively to form a crisp product.

The acting prowess of veterans Danny De Vito, Alan Rickman, Mary Steenburgen and Bill Pullman are just not utilized to the fullest extent. Instead, the burden of the story rests on the relatively immature shoulders of little known actors Bryan Greenberg and Shawn Hatosy and unfortunately, neither of them rises to the mark. I must say that Rickman does shine as the selfish and womanizing Nobel prize winner. But that's as far as it goes. He has little else to do. Overall, the plot is good, but the way it's handled and executed leaves much to be desired.

My Recommendation: See and judge this movie for yourself. Don't forget to come back and tell me whether you loved it or hated it!

Look Good Feel Better

Photobucket
Look Good…Feel Better is a free, national public service program that helps women cope with the appearance-related changes of cancer treatment through workshops across the country, self-help materials, and other free information. Look Good…Feel Better is a collaboration of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Inc. and the National Cosmetology Association.

Unfortunately, with about one in three American women expected to receive a cancer diagnosis in her lifetime, cancer will likely touch all of our lives in some way, whether through a family member, a friend, or even ourselves.  Along with the confusion and fear of a cancer diagnosis comes a number of adjustments, not the least of which, for many women, involves hair loss and other appearance-related changes that result from cancer treatment.

In honor of its 20th anniversary, Look Good…Feel Better is asking women cancer survivors to submit their stories of how the program helped them cope with cancer as a way to inspire others who may currently be undergoing cancer treatment.  Entries will be featured on the Women of Hope is Beautiful blog to help educate others. Anyone can visit the site to view entries, make comments and show their support. In August, Look Good…Feel Better will choose Five women to be featured on their website. They will win a trip to the DreamBall at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on September 24, 2009 as well as receive a professional makeover. Check out the Contest Rules.

Together with the team at Mom Central, I'd love your help in spreading the word to all women about Look Good…Feel Better and the Women of Hope is Beautiful contest and encouraging them to submit their stories of hope, determination, and courage.

Virtual Lemonade Stand

PhotobucketJust in time for the warm weather, Electrolux and Kelly Ripa are kicking off their Virtual Lemonade Stand campaign to drive awareness and raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Research. Starting this month, you can visit electroluxappliances.com to design and open your own virtual lemonade stand and even pick the flavors of lemonade you want to feature at your stand, from Sparkling Ginger to Rosemary Watermelon.

For every stand opened, Electrolux will donate $1 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). In addition, you can help the cause even more by buying and sending virtual glasses of lemonade to your friends and family, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting OCRF. This is a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer, let friends know you're thinking of them, and support a great cause. Even better, just for opening your stand, and then again every day that you log in and visit your stand, you will be entered to win a new French Door Refrigerator from Electrolux - perfect for storing your own pitchers of lemonade. When others donate to your stand, they will also have a chance to win.

The new French Door Refrigerator by Electrolux has some cool new features that make it a great refrigerator for entertaining. There is the Perfect Temp Drawer™, which provides storage for any number of items that you want to keep at the ideal temperature. It's also a large enough refrigerator to store everything from party platters to juice boxes. The French Door Refrigerator also offers double the ice so there is always enough ice on hand to fill your pitchers of lemonade.

Wendy's Frosty Father's Day

Father's Day is coming up fast and if you're stuck for inspiration, don't worry - Wendy's is here!

For the past three years, Wendy's has made it a Father's Day Frosty Weekend tradition to donate 50 cents from the sale of each Frosty to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The money raised goes to the Wendy's Wonderful Kids program, which funds full-time adoption recruiters at local agencies across the U.S., who in turn pair up parents with foster care children needing homes. So, you and your family can enjoy a tasty (and affordable!) Frosty together, knowing this campaign assists children across the country in finding a family of their own.

Involve the kids in this great cause by having them create a fun Father's Day eCard on FrostyCard.com. For every card they send, Wendy's will donate an additional 25 cents to the Dave Thomas Foundation. Kids can attach coupons for "taking out the trash" or "washing the car" onto the cards for Dad.

Thanks to Mom Central, for making me aware of this wonderful opportunity to celebrate and help others in the process!

DVD Review - Valkyrie

PhotobucketSet in Nazi Germany, Valkyrie chronicles the daring and ingenious “July 20 plot” to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Oscar-nominee Tom Cruise* (Mission Impossible, Minority Report) stars as the loyal German nationalist Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the mastermind behind the plot to kill Hitler and overthrow his fascist regime.

Convinced the Nazi leader must die at all costs, Stauffenberg joins with a group of similarly disillusioned officers and civilians whose like minds come together for a common purpose in the face of incredible odds. Directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects), Valkyrie boasts “…a top-notch international cast…” (Entertainment Weekly) including Academy Award-nominees Kenneth Branagh** (Hamlet, Henry V), Tom Wilkinson*** (Michael Clayton, In The Bedroom) and Terence Stamp (Get Smart; The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert), as well as Bill Nighy (The Constant Gardener, Love Actually) and Eddie Izzard (Ocean’s Thirteen, “The Riches”).

Single-Disc DVD Specs: Valkyrie single-disc DVD will be presented in widescreen format with English, Spanish & French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish & French subtitles.

My Thoughts: Once again a piece of crucial history is brought to cinematic life and it is a moving portrayal too. I'm not very familiar with History in the time of Hitler and as such the story was a complete surprise to me. But having researched this online, I feel the screenplay did some justice to the actual event and the cast performed excellently. The one sour point was Cruise's American accent which didn't really fit the scenario.

My Recommendation: See and judge this movie for yourself. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

DVD Review - DEFIANCE

Directed by Academy Award® winner Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond), DEFIANCE stars Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Jamie Bell (Flags Of Our Fathers) as brothers, simple farmers—outnumbered and outgunned—who turned a group of war refugees into powerful freedom fighters.

PhotobucketThree ferociously committed actors fill the roles of the Bielski brothers, Jewish partisans who escaped into the forests of Eastern Europe during the Second World War. Daniel Craig (taking a break from 007 duty) is Tuvia, the leader of a group of refugees who eventually number over a thousand; Liev Schreiber is Zus, the antagonistic warrior; and Jamie Bell is Asael, a peacemaker no less devoted to the survival of the community. The three performers give life to director Edward Zwick's account of this little-known chapter of Jewish resistance to the Holocaust, which otherwise plays more like a history lesson than a full-blooded movie.

The film's best achievement is its strong location work, in Lithuania--as the community makes its home in the forest, the landscape becomes an important player in the drama at hand, and the changing of the seasons is charted with bone-chilling detail. Schreiber manages to get a little wry humor into this otherwise sober enterprise, and Daniel Craig creates an unusual character: a sort of anti-Bond, a hero whose body is all too fallible and whose decision-making is sometimes hesitant or morally compromised. It's a rare hero in a World War II movie that tends to withdraw from scenes rather than stride into them, but that's what Craig does. More than likely, the movie's main achievement will be sending the curious to read the histories of the Bielski brothers and why they matter in the chronicles of the Holocaust.

The DEFIANCE DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 TVs with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, French 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround and English, French and Spanish subtitles.  The Blu-ray disc is presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.  The discs include the following special features in high definition as noted:

        •    Commentary by director Edward Zwick
        •    Defiance: Return to the Forest (HD)—Explores all aspects of production from the early stages of pre-production to shooting on location in Lithuania.  Edward Zwick and his creative team discuss some of the challenges and also the rewards of adapting this well-documented historical event into a feature film.
      •    Bielski Partisan Survivors (HD)—Photo gallery of images taken by Edward Zwick including behind-the-scenes images and surviving members from the Bielski Otriad.
       •    Children of the Otriad: The Families Speak (HD)—Descendents of the Bielski family tour the film's set and relate the story of the real-life partisans along with efforts to preserve the brothers' legacy.
      •    Scoring Defiance (HD) —Blu-ray only —Academy Award® nominated composer James Newton Howard and violinist Joshua Bell discuss the incredible film score for Defiance.
       •    Theatrical trailers (HD)

My Thoughts - If you like History (I love the History channel) and are a fan of some terrific acting, then  DEFIANCE will not disappoint you. I won't lie to you - Daniel Craig came as a complete surprise to me! I hadn't liked him at all in the new Bond movies (don't stone me, but I think he's absolutely the worst Bond ever!) and didn't expect anything great from him in this movie either. But, like I said before, he pleasantly surprised me. His acting is intense, effective and captures the character very well. Liev Schreiber is an actor whom I've admired in many small roles before. Here too, his is not the lead character, but his enactment of his role is worthy of mention.

My recommendation - This is definitely a movie that will appeal to a select section of the audience. The rest will love to hate it. I belong to the former category. What about you?

Oliver's Labels - Review

Photobucket

My toddler is starting summer school soon and one of the first things his teacher told me was to label everything - yes, everything! From clothes to shoes to sippy cups, I have to label every single thing. For a trial run, I got some office labels and stuck them on all my kid's stuff to see how they'd hold up. As you can guess, they didn't last, not even half a day! I was scouring the web looking for a longer-lasting solution when an opportunity came along through Family Review Network to try out Oliver’s Labels.

Debbie, the owner of Oliver’s Labels, used her 6 years of experience in the printing industry to design a label that would be both waterproof and beautiful. She then came up with the Found-it Tracking System™ to avoid sharing personal information (like a phone number) with strangers. Now that was one of my chief concerns as my son tends to lose stuff a lot and I absolutely hate the idea of putting our phone number or any other contact info on labels that can be seen and used by just about anybody. Found-it™ is an exclusive, FREE online lost-and-found system code that can customers can opt to have on their labels. This unique code connects me to my item via my email address. Oliver’s Labels acts as an intermediary, so the lost item can be tracked to its owner without anybody getting any vital info. You can read about it in detail on their website

They also have a range of label; from Waterproof, weatherproof and scuff resistant labels (tested for durability in the most demanding environments) to their particular Stick-eez™ Clothing Labels - the NO iron, NO sew solution to labeling clothes. This one is again a great feature as it's a no fuss solution that even this tired Mommy can utilize without wasting much time or energy, both of which I'm seriously lacking at the moment. They also have many beautiful full-color graphic designs to choose from for both kids and adults.  I particularly liked their foot-shaped labels for children's footwear. It's a source of delight and curiosity for my little one as well. I haven't seen anything of the like elsewhere.

Oliver’s Labels offer a lot of personalization options as well, catering to the needs of a variety of customers, and not just Moms like myself. From dishwasher to washing machines, these labels have been crafted to endure a wide variety of environments. And most importantly, they're reasonably priced as well!

Needless to say, I'm very happy with my Oliver’s Labels

Buy it! Currently all Oliver’s Labels products are 10% off as part of their tribute to Moms everywhere. Code is “Labeleverything” (one word).  Please note this code expires on June 31, 2009. Also, for a limited time, you can get Free Shipping on all orders over $30.

DVD Review - Revolutionary Road

PhotobucketRevolutionary Road
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet

Synopsis: April and Frank Wheeler are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. Their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job, and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career.

Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. As their relationship deteriorates into an endless cycle of squabbling, jealousy and recriminations, their trip and their dreams of self-fulfillment are thrown into jeopardy.

The REVOLUTIONARY ROAD DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 TVs with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, French 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround and English, French and Spanish subtitles.  The Blu-ray disc is presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.  The discs include the following special features in high definition as noted:

        •    Commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe
        •    Lives of Quite Desperation: The Making of Revolutionary Road (HD)
        •    Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe (HD)
        •    Richard Yates: The Wages of Truth (HD)—Blu-ray only

My Thoughts - Truth be told, this is a movie that made me sad and uncomfortable. It's too close to life and captures the angst of the characters with great reality. The acting, especially Winslett's is extremely good as is the direction. If you're looking for a light-hearted movie, this is not it.

My Recommendation - Watch it with plenty of tissues at hand!

The Real Thing by Vanessa Williams

Photobucket

Internationally-renowned singer and actress Vanessa Williams release her thirteenth album and debut for Concord Records entitled THE REAL THING, today. The collection marks a return to her love for the rhythms of jazz and Latin music, a key part of her musical roots. In addition, THE REAL THING delves into the sophisticated pop and R&B that have been the hallmark of her dynamic musical career.

THE REAL THING is a passionate song cycle about relationships, and Williams hand-picked each song on the record as it relates to a phase of the modern-day love affair seen from a woman’s perspective. From the two new songs penned for the CD by Babyface (“Loving You” and “Just Friends”) to “Hello Like Before” by Bill Withers (Williams’ late father’s favorite artist) to Stevie Wonder’s “The Real Thing” to Bebel Gilberto’s “Close To You,” THE REAL THING taps into the wide breadth of Williams’ musicality and artistry.

Since the release of her first studio album, 1988’s The Right Stuff, Williams has garnered a total of 16 Grammy nominations, released seven albums of original material, as well as four compilations and two holiday-themed albums, selling millions of albums world-wide.  She was nominated for yet another Grammy for her hit single, “Colors of the Wind,” from Disney’s “Pocahontas,” which went on to win an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy for “Best Song In A Motion Picture.” THE REAL THING is her first studio album since 2005’s Everlasting Love.
