I Shred U!

Created - 7/31/2009 0 Comments

Have you or someone you know been victims of bad photo tagging on Facebook? UGH! Perhaps it was that old prom photo sporting your signature big 80’s hairdo? (is that you in the attached photo ;) Or those pictures from the company holiday party you hoped would never resurface?

Now, you can have the last laugh, with the launch of the Staples I Shred U! ™ Facebook application from Staples, Inc.

I Shred U! allows Facebook users to tell their friends how they really feel about those bad photos, by shredding it to bits via a virtual shredder and sending it back with a personalized message. I Shred U! also lets users “trick” photos by giving friends and family a hilarious new look.

Nearly 50k Facebook users have installed the new Staples I Shred U! photo application in the last month. It’s being used in 30+ countries, average engagement is over 2 minutes, 70% of the users are women over the age of 25.

Below is a link to the flash video, which provides a quick walk through (sound-free) on how the application works : http://pubdyn.com/extranet/kelandpartners/

How does the application work?

The application is very simple. Once you have logged into Facebook to access the application, the user can select a photo from one of their albums or a photo that they were tagged in. The user then has the opportunity to virtually shred the photo complete with animation and sounds effects and send it to a friend with a personalized message. Users can also “trick out” photos from their Facebook albums by adding mullets, beards, speech bubbles and more.

Does the application actual delete the photo?
No, it doesn’t. The photo is the property of the person who originally uploaded it to Facebook and it will continue to live in his/her photo album. I Shred U! is just a fun way to make a statement about unflattering photos that you were tagged in.

Is there a similar application on Facebook?
No! With more than 200 million active users on Facebook uploading over 850 million photos each month, the Staples I Shred U! application is the first of its kind to allow users to virtually shred bad photos without actually deleting the picture from their friend’s Facebook album.

Be creative, have fun, share a laugh, enjoy!

Epic Summer Family Adventure

Created - 7/29/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketWhen thinking about summer getaways, it often seems impossible to find a destination that offers adventures and activities to thrill each member of our families.

Vail Resorts has come up with an ingenious solution, drawing on the majestic national parks and forests of the West to transform their village at Keystone Mountain into a family base from which daily adventure trips take place. Set in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, the Epic Summer Family Adventure offers families an action-packed getaway with four or seven-day itineraries.

Photobucket

Each day your family has an exciting fun-packed day ahead, from hiking up cool mountain trails, going white water rafting, zip lining, trail horseback riding, exploring National Parks, and adventure biking to attending a real cowboy campfire dinner under the stars. Best yet, all of the details have been taken care of for you, from transportation to guides to picnic lunches, adding up to the ultimate outdoor family experience. Moreover, back at home base other options await: Dad can hit the golf course while we Moms sneak off for some wondrous spa services.

With everything from meals to outdoor trips covered, all you have to do is show up with sneakers, a bathing suit, and a sense of adventure! Plus, the all-inclusive pricing proves surprisingly affordable. What better way to create lifelong memories than a vacation where the only thing you have to think about is how much fun you're having.

For more information about the resort and trips, please visit www.epicsummer.com.

Stylish Bra Barrette - Review and Giveaway

Created - 7/28/2009 35 Comments

Congrats to lucky winner - Latricia

PhotobucketA bra is an essential part of a woman's wardrobe. They're beautiful and functional and also sometimes, a tad irritating. Yes, I'm talking about the dreaded and often embarrassing Strap slide. Mine always seems to happen when I'm meeting other Moms (whose straps never seem to slide down, sigh). Whatever the reason, the fact is it happens... and happens more often that I'd like.
Photobucket

Solution - the Bra Barrette! They are a flexible and durable plastic that easily slips onto your straps to keep them in place under clothes all day, comfortably. The Bra Barrette is not only functional, but with the added charms and crystals it’s fashionable too. Each Bra Barrette is tinted plastic so the color will never fade. Each charm is attached by a clasp so you can interchange your charms to match your outfit! For their Crystal BBs they use Genuine Swarovski Crystal.

As its inventor, Lara Merriam-Smith, puts it -
A Bra Barrette is a lot like a hair barrette you can use a hair barrette for the function of holding your hair out of your face a Bra Barrette (BB) functions to keep your bra straps out of the way. You can also use a hair barrette to make a fashion statement, and a Bra Barrette can be used as a fashion accessory on tank tops, spaghetti-strap dresses, swimsuits or bra straps! It's a must-have accessory for every woman's wardrobe.
I didn't know what to expect when I first heard of it. I imagined something useful but utilitarian. I was so wrong! The Bra Barrette is a perfect combination of form and function and is not only designed to hold the straps in place, but it's also the ONLY strap holder DESIGNED to be seen on Tank Tops, Swimsuits and Bras. I've worn mine everywhere for a week now, even when I've grooving to the beat of my new Dance dvds (more on that later), feeding my baby or running after my toddler. And they've been there, holding my bra straps and preventing them from falling down. Yay for Bra Barrettes!

Buy it! For more information and to check out their quality merchandise, please visit http://www.brabarrette.com/. You can also help make contributions to charity, details of which can be found here - http://www.brabarrette.com/team_bb.php

DVD Review - So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit

Created - 7/28/2009 2 Comments

As is the case with most pregnancies, it's easy enough to gain the weight, but not so easy to lose it. That's why I like these 2 Dvds - So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Tone and Groove & So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Cardio Funk.

With nearly 20 million watching each week “So You Think You Can Dance” is a pop culture sensation entering into its fifth season on air. For the first time ever, fans can tone and sculpt their bodies by moving along with the incredible dancers from the show as they demonstrate easy-to-follow routines in a variety of dance genres.

In Tone and Groove viewers can flex and condition their muscles with Stephen “Twitch” Boss as he takes them through a Hip Hop routine, tighten their abs with Dmitry Chaplin through the Cha Cha and then stretch it out with Katee Shean doing Jazz.

Cardio Funk turns up the heat as Courtney Galiano puts viewers through their paces on the Disco floor, Travis Wall gets hearts pumping in a Contemporary routine and Lauren Gottlieb’s Hip Hop dance works up a sweat.

With over 90 minutes of calorie-burning and body-sculpting moves, each DVD also includes a warm-up and cool down session, a bonus workout, behind-the-scenes interviews with the dancers and more. The DVDs arrive just in time for the highly-anticipated finale of Season Five and will be available for the suggested retail price of $16.99 each.

Ziploc Evolve Bags

Created - 7/23/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketLooking for ways to turn your brown bag lunch a little “greener?” SC Johnson, the makers of Ziploc®, is introducing sandwich and storage bags with a design that’s better for the environment. New Ziploc Evolve sandwich and storage bags are made with 25% less plastic and with wind energy.

SC Johnson encourages families to try new twists on traditional packed lunches and leftovers, and offers solutions that are easier on the wallet and the environment:
  • Add class to lunchtime favorites. Toting your lunch can save you up to $2,250 a year, but it doesn’t have to mean PB&Js every day. For a gourmet-style sandwich, try topping hearty whole-grain bread with fruit chutney, turkey or ham, and Havarti or Swiss cheese, or pack flatbread crackers, cheeses, olives, and pickles for a Euro-inspired lunch.
  • Turn a “brown bag” lunch green. For a “green bag” lunch, use a reusable insulated lunch bag or box, and pack locally grown, seasonal foods in Ziploc evolve bags. Check the produce signs at your favorite grocery or superstore to see where your fruits and vegetables were grown, or visit a local farmers market.
  • Leave leftovers behind. Stretch grocery dollars by preserving leftovers in food storage bags – but instead of reheating last night’s dinner, bring leftovers back to life in new recipes. Make delicious fried rice by sautéing leftover rice, meat and veggies with a beaten egg and a dash of soy sauce. Or use canned tomatoes and vegetables to make homemade pasta sauce for dinner one night, and save the unused ingredients for chili another night.
The bags are available in sandwich ($2.49), quart ($3.49) and gallon ($3.49) sizes.

DVD Review - Bolt (and U Rock 2)

Created - 7/22/2009 2 Comments

Synopsis - Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) is the star of the biggest show in Hollywood. The only problem is, he thinks the whole thing is real. When the super dog is accidentally shipped to New York City and separated from Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus), his beloved co-star and owner, Bolt springs into action to find his way home.

Together with his hilarious new sidekicks Rhino (voiced by Mark Walton) – Bolt’s #1 Fan – and a street-smart cat named Mittens (voiced by Susie Essman), Bolt sets off on an amazing journey where he discovers he doesn’t need super powers to be a hero.

Fun, fast-paced and with plenty of hi-jinks to keep the kids (and their parents!) entertained. BOLT is one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in recent times.

Twist Products - Review & Giveaway

Created - 7/22/2009 90 Comments

Congrats to winner Katie!

PhotobucketI love a clean home - I can't help it, it's an obsession (which is why you see so many cleaning product reviews here!). Rubber gloves, sponges, scrubbers - I have used them all! But all the while I'm cleaning with products found in supermarket shelves, a part of me always goes : "Tsk, tsk, tsk! there you go, not respecting Mother Earth". It's a pesky little voice that just won't quit! But now I can make it shut up by using TWIST natural and eco-friendly household cleaning tools made with simple and smart designs.

  Photobucket Photobucket

In 2006, TWIST founders Egil Wigert and Brian Ross took a closer look at the sponges in their kitchens and realized something profound. Almost every other product in the cleaning aisle has undergone some kind of evolution, while sponges and other cleaning tools have been the same for decades. They set out to turn the world of cleaning tools on its head – combining design and environmental responsibility to create functional, beautiful, and responsible alternatives. All TWIST products are 100% biodegradable, free of dyes and are top-rack dishwasher safe.

  • Bamboo Cloth: Made from 82% bamboo and 18% corn, the Bamboo Cloth is a 100% biodegradable cloth that is perfect for dusting, drying and polishing.
  • Dish Dumpling: The Dish Dumpling is a chubby little nugget of sponge power, packed in an agave wrapper. It makes removing even baked-on food kind of funn. Best of all, the Dish Dumpling is dye free and biodegradable.
  • Loofah Scrubby: The Loofah Scrubby is a gentle, biodegradable sponge completely covered with a super scrubby loofah – great for scouring and scrubbing pots and pans.
  • Loofah Sponge: The Loofah Sponge is one side absorbent sponge and one side natural loofah. Our earth-friendly Loofah Sponge offers safer and more effective scouring and scrubbing power for scratch-prone pans.
  • Naked Sponge (small, medium & large sizes): A fresh twist on a conventional sponge, the Naked Sponge offers a dye-free, durable, 100% biodegradable, and stylish option for day-to-day cleaning. Now available in 3 convenient sizes!
  • Ravioli Scrubby: A hemp burlap pouch filled with an all-natural, biodegradable sponge, the Ravioli Scrubby cleans and gently scrubs – perfect for baked-on food, tough grease and stubborn dirt.
  • Sponge Blossoms: These small and handy sponges can hang anywhere around the house in case of the sudden need for a quick, durable and effective cleaning tool. Just add water, and watch the sponge blossom grow to a full-size sponge – ready for cleaning and wiping.
  • Sponge Cake: A new spin on a conventional product, our Sponge Cake offers a durable, biodegradable, and stylish option for day-to-day cleaning.
  • Sponge Cloth: With the absorbency of a paper towel and the reusability of a sponge, the Sponge Cloth is a modern and eco-friendly solution for wiping even the messiest of spills. It’s long lasting (one Sponge Cloth equals approximately 17 rolls of paper towels) and biodegradable (the Sponge Cloth disappears after 8-15 weeks if buried in the soil).

But how is TWIST different? Good question!

TWIST Points of Difference:
  • Eco-friendly - The cellulose used to make TWIST products is sourced from renewable tree farms. In addition, TWIST takes special care to make sure most of its waste is reused in production, and is committed to continually improving production process to minimize the effect on the environment. Even the paperboard packaging on many can be turned into a bird feeder or a bird mobile. How’s that for a twist?!
  • Innovative Designs - Durable, biodegradable and stylish, TWIST products offer a new approach to kitchen and bathroom cleaning through innovative and effective designs. For example, TWIST’s Loofah Sponge is the only sponge on the market with one side absorbent sponge and one side natural loofah. And, it offers safer and more effective scouring and scrubbing power for scratch-prone pans.
  • Efficiency - In addition to having equal or better efficacy as comparable conventional products, TWIST products are more durable and longer lasting. For example – with the absorbency of a paper towel and the reusability of a sponge, one TWIST Sponge Cloth is equivalent to approximately 17 rolls of paper towels.
  • Philanthropy - In partnership with Global Response, TWIST works to protect the diversity of our planet and the rights of all people. Find out more at www.twistclean.com/globalresponse.

They were kind enough to send me some of these great, eco-friendly cleaning products for review and I can't put it in better words than - they WORK! And wonderfully, to boot! I'm so happy with them. The Dish Dumpling is better than even the metal scrubs at getting out those crusty remains while the Loofah sponge manages to get even the stubborn stains my toddler is so adept at creating, off of the floors. The same with the European Sponge cloth that's worked wonders on my crayon covered wallpaper. And the Naked sponge is so good for my counters and the spills thereof.

Buy it! For more information on Twist products as well as for information on where to buy their products, just visit http://www.twistclean.com/.

Earthbound Farm Contest

Created - 7/21/2009 0 Comments

Earthbound Farm has some news for youngsters. The company has just launched a web-based contest seeking quotes from children for the inside of its clamshell salad labels. Kids will be encouraged to submit quotes thanking those who purchase organic for helping protect the future.

For each child’s quote that is chosen, they have the opportunity to win:

1. A $500 US Savings Bond for a child’s future education

2. A $500 donation in a child’s name to their choice of one of these dedicated nonprofit environmental organizations:
3. Winning quotes will appear on the back of their new salad labels and on the Earthbound Farm website! They’ve switched to post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic for their salad containers, and they’re designing new labels that carry the PCR symbol. Winning quotes will appear on the back of those labels, and on their website, too. They’ll select 4 winners in July and then add a new winner every month through the end of 2009!

To enter the contest, visit http://www.ebfarm.com/Products/KidsQuoteContest.aspx

This contest is open to legal US residents who submit their entry with the permission of their parent or guardian, and who are 17 years of age or under at that time. Winning quotes will be identified by first name, age, and city/state on the Earthbound Farm website and on package labels. Parents or guardians must provide their name, e-mail address and daytime phone number in case their child’s entry is a winner. Either adult or child must provide their Social Security Number to receive their prize and register their bond. Earthbound Farm respects your privacy; they won’t share your personal information with anyone else.

For a while now I've been a member of Gather.com, the leading social network to make new friends and form new social circles. But only recently did I find out about the Gather Points™ program, a popular site feature that rewards members for creating great experiences for the community!

The company recently announced that they’ve paid out more than $500,000 to members since the Gather Points program began. Since the start of 2009, members have redeemed over $85,000 in points they have put towards everything from home improvement projects and family vacations to summer fun for the kids.

Gather Points can be exchanged for gift cards from partners like Amazon.com, Starbucks, Target, The Gap, and Home Depot; new partners are added all the time. You can even redeem your points for cash through PayPal to buy the stuff you want most!

Family Fun Book & Making Life Better

Created - 7/20/2009 0 Comments

Unilever, the consumer package goods company, has spent a great deal of time thinking about how to make everyday life better and help us find ways to create great meals and do more with less. The company's Web site, www.MakingLifeBetter.com, features delicious recipes, affordable meal ideas and tips that stretch your budget and save you time. From Baked Pasta Primavera Casserole to Fresh Vegetables over Couscous, the secret to dinner success in my home is to keep a well-stocked kitchen filled with easy-to-prepare, delicious pantry staples with brands I know and trust.

PhotobucketTo bring some variety to meal-planning this summer, Unilever teamed up with the author of the "Kitchen Coach" cookbook series, Jennifer Bushman, to create the ultimate Family Fun Book, filled with delicious recipes and affordable meal ideas perfect for the whole family to enjoy – together.  The Family Fun Book can be downloaded for free by clicking here.

Bushman recommends making meal time "family time" by bringing the kids into the kitchen to help prepare the meal.  By keeping a well-stocked refrigerator, freezer, and pantry with versatile and easy-to-prepare ingredients, it's simple to get the whole family involved in the cooking process.  In addition to kid-friendly recipes, Bushman suggests, add in a little fun with creative themes and recipes like these:
  • Have an at-home dinner picnic. Spread a blanket out in the living room and prepare simple sandwiches or wraps, like a delicious Chicken & Basil Sandwich. Opt for Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise, which has the great taste but half the calories and fat of Hellmann's. Get the kids involved by letting them pick the sandwich fixins and spread the mayo!
  • Save on cooking and clean-up time by choosing easy, delicious, one-pot dips and recipes. Use sweet potatoes or yams to prepare Spicy Oven Fries and pair with your favorite dipping sauce. To sneak in some nutrition and receive 20 percent of your daily value of Vitamin D, top with melted Shedd's Spread Country Crock Calcium Plus Vitamin D. With just three steps, this recipe is perfect for setting loose your child's inner chef.
  • To make nights in even more enjoyable, pair meals with fun at-home entertainment. Spend less time in the kitchen by using Knorr Rice Sides to make an easy one-dish meal like Grilled Chicken & Veggies Over Rice, then create a show by letting your kids sing their favorite songs in your very own "kitchen cabaret."
  • Host a camping-inspired sleepover for the kids and create a kitchen retreat with campfire meals. Use whole grain tortillas as a healthy and easy dipper for your favorite one-pot recipes like Super Easy Slow-Cooked Chili with Ragu Pasta Sauce, which packs a full serving of vegetables in every half-cup of sauce. Not to mention that a slow cooked meal leaves more time for "camping" activities!
  • Use versatile ingredients from your well-stocked pantry. Wish-Bone Dressings can do double-duty as delicious salad dressings and simple, great tasting marinades for chicken, pork, beef and fish. Pair with soy sauce for a delicious Asian Grilled Steak. You may want to keep your children away from the grill, but they can help by preparing the steak ahead of time.
  • Summer and iced tea go hand-in-hand to stay hydrated. Did you know those tea bags can also spice up your cooking?  Use Lipton Teabags to create Tasty Tea Baked Apples – a delicious desert with an extra helping of antioxidants for just $1 per serving.
Have fun this summer and remember to bookmark www.MakingLifeBetter.com to make life a little bit easier.

DVD Review - Van Wilder : Freshman Year

Created - 7/14/2009 0 Comments

Van Wilder: Freshman Year - Unrated

Packed with panty raids, wild parties and shocking behavior, Van Wilder: Freshman Year moves to the head of the class, arriving exclusively on DVD today from Tapestry Films and Paramount Home Entertainment. The third installment in the hugely popular college comedy franchise from the producers of Wedding Crashers and Van Wilder 1 and 2, Van Wilder: Freshman Year makes the grade with an even more outrageous Unrated edition stuffed with a semester’s worth of sidesplitting bonus features.

The long-awaited story of the legendary party animal’s uproarious introduction to Coolidge College is finally here, revealing for the first time his rise to become the man, the myth...the seven-year college senior. It features a young cast including Jonathan Bennett (Mean Girls) as “Van the Man” and Kristin Cavallari (Laguna Beach), as well as Steve Talley (American Pie Presents Beta House), Kurt Fuller (Wayne’s World) and Linden Ashby (Resident Evil: Extinction) as Van’s partners in mayhem.

In this movie, a young Van follows in his wealthy father’s footsteps by enrolling at prestigious Coolidge College. Much to the easygoing slacker’s dismay, however, Coolidge is hardly the party school he envisioned. Instead, it’s a strict institution led by an uptight dean—and to make matters worse, all the girls have taken a vow of chastity! Determined to rectify this intolerable situation, the civic-minded Van launches a personal crusade to free his school from the shackles of sexual oppression and party dysfunction.

Gut-busting bonus features include:
  • Commentary with Director Harv Glazer and cast
  • Creating the Legend: The Making of Van Wilder: Freshman Year
  • Going Balls Out: Colossus
  • Coolidge College: Orientation Video
  • Decatur
  • Teacher’s Pets
  • Bloopers
  • Van’s Party Supplies (unrated)
  • Pranks 101 (unrated)
This movie reminded me irresistibly of the American Pie ones, except it's a lot more juvenile despite being set in a college atmosphere. It does have some moments of outright hilarity and there's no denying the fresh cast, the sexual jokes together with the physical comedy is effective. It's more of a couple/guy movie and doesn't require a lot of thinking.

Movie Review - Weather Girl

Created - 7/10/2009 1 Comments

PhotobucketWritten and Directed by Blayne Weaver, the film recently won Best Narrative Feature at the deadCENTER Film Festival. On the festival circuit, Weather Girl has also won an Honorary Mention for the Audience Award at Nashville Film Festival and Best Narrative Feature at Vail Film Festival. The film stars Tricia O’Kelley, Mark Harmon, Jon Cryer, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Lynch, Patrick J. Adams, Ryan Devlin, Enrico Colantoni and Alex Kapp Horner.

Synopsis:  After learning her boyfriend (Harmon) cheated on her with his co-host (Olson), a Seattle morning show weather girl (O’Kelley) freaks out on-air and is fired. Forced to move in with her little brother (Devlin) and deal with his best friend (Adams), she has to learn to cope with being 35, single, unemployed, and unfortunately famous for being the Sassy Weather Girl who lost it on live television.

My Thoughts:  If this movie had come to the local AMC, I probably wouldn't have seen it as the lead star cast is totally unknown to me. But having been lucky enough to see the screener, I now know what I would have missed something totally quirky, but essentially funny and romantic. The "sassy" weather girl as played by O'Kelley is really wonderful, the often-sarcastic verbal diarrhea she indulges in whenever upset is just too funny for words! Mark Harmon, I love from NCIS. In this movie however, he plays the role of the "walking haircut", a totally unlikeable, narcissistic Morning show host and he is so good at it that I actually did begin to dislike him toward the end. Patrick J. Adams and Ryan Devlin as the laid-back dudes who, in an unexpected manner, provide this flighty woman with some grounding and stability, are surprisingly effective. The overall acting is good, the story engaging and the rapid-fire dialogue, stellar!

My Recommendation : Don't pass it up when this movie comes to a theater near you. It's good, clean fun!
For more information, please visit  http://weathergirlmovie.com/ The movie releases on July 10th.

Enjoy the trailer:

DVD Review - Betrayed

Created - 7/08/2009 0 Comments

The Betrayed

Synopsis : Waking up in a dark room after being knocked unconscious in a car accident and her young son nowhere in sight, Jamie Taylor (Melissa George), realizes that she has been kidnapped. Her masked captor (Oded Fehr) informs her that if she ever hopes to see her son alive again, she must help his mysterious employers. However, they’re not looking to collect a ransom; instead, the man reveals that Jamie’s husband is secretly a brutal killer who recently stole millions from his bosses.

The organization will stop at nothing to retrieve the missing money, and they think that their captive is the one person who can help them find it. Chained to a grate in a cold, dark room, with her marriage upended, her son’s life in jeopardy and no idea who she can trust, Jamie must attempt to piece together clues from the life she thought she knew in order to escape this nightmare and save the lives of her beloved family.

Single-Disc DVD Specs: The Betrayed single-disc DVD will be presented in widescreen format with English & Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English, Spanish & French subtitles.

My Thoughts: The Betrayed is a good, entertaining movie. Golden Globe® nominee* Melissa George's (“In Treatment,” “Alias”) acting is (somewhat) convincing as a woman whose world has turned on its head in an instant and she's unable to make out what is real and what is not. Other supporting characters have also been cast well, especially Oded Fehr who plays the role of her masked captor. Now this is a versatile actor whom I've seen in many other movies, playing small but vital roles. It's the same here. His distinct voice gave him away even though you can make out little through the mask. Atmospherically, the dingy cell where she's held is the focal point of the movie and that's very effective. And the ending is typical Hollywood, but effective nonetheless.

I don't call this movie stellar for just one reason - it comes close to outright thrilling moments time and again, but these fizz out almost as soon as they appear. Therefore, every emotion it causes in the audience is somewhat muted, for no sooner than expectations are raised, that they're dashed. It's not too terrifying, it's not too suspenseful, not too scary, not too adventurous. Like I said, faded.

My Recommendation : It's a good way to pass a Sunday afternoon. However, I'd recommend you rent it, rather than buy it.
