Congrats to lucky winner Amy

Photobucket

Three new Moms felt the need "for modern and funky shoes for babies and toddlers that were also lightweight, soft, super flexible and affordable." The result, Livie & Luca baby and toddler shoe creations that incorporate brightly colored leathers, bold designs and whimsical modern touches that capture the playful essence of childhood. They're also HANDMADE!

Photobucket Photobucket

What I like about them is their unique-ness! Really, you won't find shoes like these at any “big box” store. They're also made from the softest leather, allowing growing little feet to breathe. My son loves running about (that's his normal speed) in his new Emilio's Navy and Tan Loafers and the Red Fun Dots for my daughter are just too cute for words! They also have a superflexible and lightweight sole which helps with stability and coordination as my little ones navigate diverse surfaces, from that of a playground to the polished floors of a mall. In short, they're a beautiful and comfortable blend of fun, form and fashion!

Livie & Luca are also actively engaged in reducing their carbon footprint. Did you know that their customers can send back their gently-worn Livie & Luca shoes for donation to a non-profit that coordinates the distribution of shoes for families in need?!

Buy it! To find which stores carry their shoes as well as to check out all their great shoes, visit http://livieandluca.com/

Dvd Review - I Love You, Man

Created - 8/20/2009 0 Comments

I Love You, Man
Starring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel

Paul Rudd (Role Models, Knocked Up) and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) are “howlingly funny” in “one of the funniest movies of the decade”, a story of a guy with no male friends who finds himself in need of a best man. After a series of awkward outings, Peter (Rudd) finally bonds with fun-loving Sydney (Segel). Rudd and Segel’s “bro-mance” takes male-bonding to hilarious new heights in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a friend.

Both Dvd and Blu-Ray iscs include the following special features, in high definition on Blu-ray as noted:

• The Making of I Love You, Man (HD) – An 18-minute feature with cast interviews and a special look behind-the-scenes of the film’s most outrageous moment
• Outtakes (HD) – Hilarious alternate versions of scenes with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel
• Extended Scenes (HD)
• Deleted Scenes (HD)
• Gag Reel (HD)
• Commentary by director John Hamburg and actors Paul Rudd and Jason Segel
• Red Band Trailer (HD) – Blu-ray exclusive

Personally speaking, I loved this movie! It got off to a slow start and I expected something typically masculine, full of macho posturing, crass sexual innuendos and perhaps even nudity. And to say that I was pleasantly surprised is to understate it. I have liked Paul Rudd from way back, first as Alicia Silverstone's stepbrother in 'Clueless' and later on as Phoebe's boyfriend in 'Friends'. But never have his talents been showcased better than in this movie. Rudd is outstanding as the guy who's too much in touch with his feminine side and who's stung into searching for a male friend after overhearing his fiance's fears that "his mother is his best friend". Segel is the perfect candidate as his scathingly honest ways and masculine behavior are in total contrast to Rudd who's naturally attracted to him - as a male friend, nothing more. I did think at one point that the movie was taking a gay turn, but that was just a clever red herring.

What happens next can be classified as that new genre - a beautiful and perfect bro-mantic comedy.

In short, watch it!

George Benson's Songs and Stories

Created - 8/20/2009 0 Comments

National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master and 10X Grammy-winning, legendary musician George Benson will release his new album on August 25th entitled Songs and Stories, his second for Concord Records / Monster Music.

The album is a collection of tunes penned by some of the most prolific and enduring songwriters of the last half-century. Some were written specifically for this new recording, such as Bill Withers’ (who came out of retirement to write “A Telephone Call Away” for George), Rod Temperton’s “Family Reunion” and Lamont Dozier’s “Living in High Definition”; while others, including James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”, Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night in Georgia” were hand-picked by Benson for their ability to convey simple but universal truths about the human experience.

Indeed, the record captures the somewhat underappreciated essential brilliance of his storied career; the ability to simply touch people through authentic lyrics and beautiful melody. On Songs and Stories, George Benson’s musical artistry has perhaps never been on sharper display.

To celebrate the release of Songs And Stories, fans can visit the official Benson website, georgebenson.com and receive a free mp3 download of "Living In High Definition", the new song written by legendary composer Lamont Dozier. Additionally on the website, fans can view "The George Benson Sessions: The Making Of Songs And Stories”, a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new record. The series will be updated with a new video each week leading up to and through the August 25 release.

1. Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - (James Taylor)

2. Family Reunion - (Rod Temperton-Catero Colbert)

3. Show Me the Love - (David Paich-Steve Lukather)

4. A Telephone Call Away - (Bill Withers)

5. Someday We’ll All Be Free – (Donny Hathaway-Ed Howard)

6. Nuthin’ But a Party - (Roger Troutman-Larry Troutman-Marlon McClain-Robert

7. Come in From the Cold - (Marc Broussard-Radney Foster-Justin Tocket)

Back to School - Packing A Healthy Lunch

Created - 8/20/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketWith Back-to-School right around the corner, Mike Naples, the CEO of Zone Delivery USA, a leading diet delivery service based on the 40/30/30 radio of carbohydrates, proteins and favorable fats, has compiled some helpful tips for parents on building the best brown bag lunch – starting with tossing the brown bag!

Step 1: Forget the brown bag

It’s better for the environment. Plus, lunch boxes are sturdier, and insulated lunch bags are the best way to keep food fresh throughout the day. Convince the older kids with retro lunch boxes that will go perfectly with their Wayfarers and Rolling Stones T-shirts.

Step 2: Pick Your Protein

Sandwiches can be an excellent source of protein. Branch out from the Ham and Cheese and PB&J’s to give the kids something to look forward to. Try substituting cashew or almond butter for a healthy variety, or using leftover chicken or roast beef with light mayo, mustard, lettuce, and a slice of cheese. Also, we all know that substituting wraps for carb-laden slices of bread is a great way to cut back, so introduce this to the kids while they still have an attraction to “tube-shaped” food.

Step 3: Substitute Sides

Most kids think their lunch is incomplete without a bag of chips, but the salty processed snack food won’t help them get through the day with enough energy left for soccer practice. Try some healthy alternatives like sending a salad in a small container, packing string cheese with whole grain crackers, making a fruit salad, including dried fruit and nuts, or sending crunchy carrots with a small container of veggie dip.

Step 4: Skip the Soda

Many parents pack the lunch and leave a dollar or two or their kids to get a drink in the cafeteria. According to the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) drinking too much soda, flavored drinks, or even juice can contribute to cavities, childhood obesity, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems. Try freezing a small bottle of water and including it instead – most children don’t drink enough water, and the frozen bottle will help keep the rest of the lunch cold until midday.

Step 5: Sweet Stuff

You know they’ll be angry if they get through digging and don’t find a dessert. Pay close attention to portion size and think about subbing trail mix, dried fruit, granola bars, Jell-O, or low-fat pudding for that pre-packaged row of Oreos.

Step 6: Snack Attack

Growing kids seem to be hungry all the time, so why do we think that one meal at noon is enough to keep them going through all their after-school activities? Pack snacks like granola bars, crackers and peanut butter, trail mix or “Ants on a Log” for the 3PM energy drop.

About : Zone Delivery USA (www.zonedeliveryusa.com) is a leading meal delivery service provider based on balanced meals using a ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% favorable fats.

Barley & Birch - Review & Giveaway

Created - 8/19/2009 40 Comments

Congrats to lucky winner - Natalie

Photobucket

I'm a lover of all things organic, natural and eco-friendly. So when I saw Barley & Birch's (the name itself is so *green*!) slogan -- Unabashedly organic, planet-saving clothes -- I immediately emailed them about featuring them here, on my blog. Kids need clothes, but they also need a healthy abundant world. Barley & Birch was created to give them both.

I can't help but love them because :
  • Their shirts, onesies, pants and hats are made in the USA
  • Their designs both delight children and interest adults.
  • They also make endangered animals look fun and nature look chic - not an easy feat.
  • They use 100% certified organic cotton and water-based inks (which means they don’t pollute the earth, water, or expose farm workers to toxins.)
  • Also, at least 15% of their profits go to several carbon-reducing initiatives in order to fully offset the carbon emissions that result from the production of their garments.
  • And at least another 15% goes to organizations that improve people’s lives around the world.
  • They are largely paper-free and any paper involved with the line is 100% post-consumer recycled.
  • They work with manufacturers and suppliers that are largely powered by solar energy.

Whether wearing the Panda bear tee or the Gazelle tank, or donning their Bubbles or the Fishies hat, I can rest assured that my son and his skin are in good hands. And there's nothing that can beat that kind of peace of mind for sure!

Practice of 3 Breath Awareness!

Created - 8/18/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketEver notice that a day in a Mom's life often times has nothing to do with the woman in you at all!? It’s true, and you know it! From sun up to sun down a woman plays many active and often times exhausting roles – nurturing mother, activities coordinator, on-time taxi service, Love Goddess, chef, housekeeper, dog walker, dedicated employee, and the list goes on and on. All of which leaves little or no time to focus on – YOU! And, as we know all too well, if you’re frazzled and feeling unbalanced, it’s safe to assume those around you feel the same way as well.

Expert Marlise Karlin (www.marlisekarlin.com) is here to share her insight on how important it is to focus on yourself, even if it just for 3 – 5 minutes a day with the Practice of 3 Breath Awareness!

3 Breath Awareness is an extraordinary tool that allows you to reboot yourself and access the well of limitless knowledge within you in moments. It is something that can be utilized many times a day and will always deepen your connection to your true essence, and to live in balance throughout your day.

How to Experience 3 Breath Awareness:
  • Practice first with your eyes closed. You can be standing or sitting. Close your eyes. If possible, listen to peaceful music or sit quietly in silence.
  • Allow any tension in your body to be released with each breath you take.
  • Breathe very deeply. Breathe so deep you can feel the air as it moves throughout every cell in your body.
  • With each breath feel yourself relaxing even more.
  • Place your awareness within yourself.
  • After the 3rd DEEP breath, sit in the awareness. Continue breathing and looking within.
  • Maintain this inner focus for 1-3 minutes or longer. The level of stress you were in when you began will determine the length of time needed to feel this shift in consciousness.
  • With your eyes still closed, notice if you can feel what has changed. Often, people say that even the air surrounding them has a different quality. Many feel the enlivened energy stream as it moves within them, often in the form of a tingling sensation in their hands or the top of the head and throughout their body.
  • Then, open your eyes while holding onto the stillness you have just moved into. When you take action from this state of ‘being’, it will enhance all the outcomes you are looking for, as well as greatly improve your state of mind in the moment.

Back to School - Burlington Coat Factory

Created - 8/13/2009 0 Comments

It’s hard to imagine but children, teens and college students will be headed back-to-school before you know it. With clothing trends changing day-by-day and prices soaring through the roof how do parents find the best deal for their dollar? That is where your neighborhood Burlington Coat Factory (BCF) and a local shopping expert come into play.

BCF recently issued its fall trend forecast for this year’s must-have back-to-school fashions. Pricing at BCF is typically up to seventy percent below department store prices and a layaway option is in place to make back-to-school shopping a breeze.

Some versatile pieces and styles parents should be on the lookout for to help maximize their fashion budgets can be found below in addition to popular looks of the fall back-to-school season for junior high and high-school kids.
  • Boho: This updated and modern bohemian look replaces the bell bottoms and earthy looks from years past with destroyed skinny denim, folk-inspired fringe vests, shaggy faux fur vests and hobo fringe bags and shoes. The current times have brought back this trend but its new age focus is funky, edgy and light hearted. Burlington calls it Boho chic.
  • Moto: It won’t just be biker babes who are wearing motorcycle jackets. This is a great style to invest in because it’s so versatile. Teens can wear motorcycle jackets with everything from feminine dresses and skirts to wide leg trousers and skinny jeans. It’s perfect for the rock-n-roll punk princess.
  • Destroyed Denim – Not just a hole in the knee; the entire jean is shredded for an updated look.
  • Plaid: Not your grandpa's plaid. This revisited classic uses buffalo check and argyle patterns with fun, bright colors to make the look stand out. Classy and cool – check!

Roy Hargrove's Emergence

Created - 8/12/2009 0 Comments

PhotobucketAcclaimed trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Roy Hargrove realizes a lifelong dream with the August 25th release of Emergence (Groovin' High/Emarcy), his first big band album. Nineteen pieces strong, Hargrove's ensemble is a vibrant and versatile group, tackling a wide range of material and styles with equal doses of precision and passion. "Financially speaking, this is probably the worst thing I could ever do," says Hargrove, "but it is something that needs to be done, spiritually and musically speaking."

The seeds of Emergence were planted in 1995, when Hargrove first formed a big band for a New York jazz festival. His big band concept grew as he led the evolving group through a series of regular gigs at the Jazz Gallery, a not-for-profit performance space in lower Manhattan - which proved an invaluable for both Hargrove and the musicians who participated. "The Jazz Gallery is for up-and-coming young players," Hargrove explains. "I go around to jam sessions a lot, sit in with cats, and I think that the new generation doesn't have a lot of experience playing in sections and playing in big bands. So this provides younger guys with a sense of camaraderie that is not really evident anymore in jazz."

The lineup solidified into the group showcased on the eleven tracks of Emergence, which features Hargrove on trumpet, flugelhorn, and a rare lead vocal (on the standard "September in the Rain") alongside four other trumpet players (Frank Greene, Greg Gisbert, Darren Barrett, Ambrose Akinmisure), four trombonists (Jason Jackson, Vincent Chandler, Saunders Sermons, and Max Seigel on bass trombone), five reedists (Bruce Williams, alto saxophone and flute; Justin Robinson, alto and flute; Norbert Stachel, tenor sax and flute; Keith Loftis, tenor and flute; and Jason Marshall, baritone sax and flute), and the rhythm section of pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Danton Boller, guitarist Saul Rubin, drummer Montez Coleman and percussionist Roland Guerrero. Vocalist Roberta Gambarini (named "Rising Star Female Vocalist of the Year" in Downbeat's 2009 Critic's Poll) contributes two affecting performances. The album's repertoire boasts an accomplished and refreshing mix of original compositions (from both Hargrove and his bandmates), standards, and favorites from outside writers. Stylistically, the music ranges from furious swingers to majestic ballads to rollicking Latin jams.

Since his own emergence in the late '80s, Hargrove has proved to be an adventurous and wide-ranging artist, proudly immersed in the jazz tradition and yet continually striking out for new terrain. Among his groups include the straight-ahead, hard-bop Roy Hargrove Quintet and Crisol, an Afro-Cuban ensemble that won a Grammy in 1998 for Best Latin Jazz Performance with its album Habana. With the funk-oriented RH Factor, Hargrove released the 2003 album Hard Groove, featuring guest appearances by R&B superstars Erykah Badu, Common and D'Angelo. His last album, 2008's quintet session Earfood (Groovin' High/Emercy), was featured in dozens of year-end Top 10 lists.

Hargrove's big band, which cites the large bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, and Gerald Wilson as key influences, has already been showcased at the Hollywood Bowl and SummerStage in New York's Central Park. "The small group has been such a big deal for so long in jazz that people forget where the small groups came from," says Hargrove. "There's nothing like the feeling you get when you're hearing your compositions and arrangements played by a wall of sound. I'm just trying to make some music that's fun to hear and play."

O Yikes 9.2.5 Messenger Bag - Review & Giveaway

Created - 8/10/2009 91 Comments

Congrats to lucky winner- Annette

Photobucket
As if going around everywhere with 2 kids in tow wasn't tiring enough, I also had to drag along a bulky, cumbersome diaper bag. It just wasn't cutting it and I wanted something to replace it. I investigated various diaper bags and they all had something good to offer. But I was looking for something that would outlast the diaper years and be useful beyond. Ordinary bags just didn't cut it and diaper bags had a "shelf life". That's when I came across and fell for the O Yikes! bags that are designed for active people on the go."Hey, that's me!", I thought. And luckily so did they, for they kindly sent along the 9.2.5 Messenger bag for review.
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

As the name implies, the 9.2.5 was created to keep up with a “traditional” work day of 9 to 5. The 9.2.5 includes the larger Messenger bag, laptop sleeve, and accessory case.
  • The Messenger bag is equipped with multiple pockets to carry cell phones, mp3s, and pdas.
  • The laptop sleeve is designed as either an insert sleeve to keep your computer safe in the larger Messenger bag or as a stand alone portable laptop tote. The laptop sleeve can hold up to a 15.4” laptop.
  • The accessory case is perfect for keeping your memory sticks and post it notes organized.
The 9.2.5 is an ideal work, school, and all around “do it all” bag. I can take it to Gymboree, I can take it to the Library, I can take it to the grocery store. And even to work, if I so desire! With all it's pockets and accessory case, I've also found it ideal as a diaper bag. It holds everything my old bag did and has space to spare! And it does all this while looking as unlike a diaper bag as can be possible. So much so that it's the only bag my husband consents to tote around everywhere. Slim and sleek to look at from the outside, and spacious and pocket-full on the inside has made this a perfect family favorite. That's not all! The laptop sleeve is perfect for my laptop and I can now take that along when I take my son to his gym class and work alongside! The accessory case is doing double duty and holding my wallet. All in all, the 9.2.5 is working out ideal for me.

O Yikes! bags are hip with a practical unisex look. Designed as multi – functional computer bags, fashionable school bags, cool travel bags, and of course as do-it-all diaper bags. Their bags are designed to keep up with you, whether you prefer to carry your bag as a single strap back pack with their signature hands free Slingback, as a shoulder bag with their more traditional Messenger bag, or even if you need the extra room with their expandable 1960’s retro inspired Square bag. All O Yikes! bags have ample pockets and features, but the bags can be further customized with matching accessories to meet the everyday demands to easily fit with your lifestyle.

What to Expect Healthy Home Growth Chart

Created - 8/06/2009 0 Comments

There's a new free resource for moms from The What to Expect Foundation and Clorox called “What to Expect Healthy Home Growth Chart.” This guide gives parents helpful tips for a healthy home during each milestone of a child’s first few years.

The name of this new guide may sound familiar to you if you’re familiar with Heidi Murkoff’s What to Expect Series. Actually, Heidi worked with The What to Expect Foundation and Clorox to develop the “What to Expect: Guide to a Healthy Home” in 2006. The “What to Expect Healthy Home Growth Chart” is a  new supplement to the original healthy home guide that’s shorter and is broken down by your child’s age. This is an easy-to-read, quick “how-to” guide, available soon for download free here, about doing one of parents’ most important jobs - keeping the home healthy. As Moms, we know better than anyone how fast children grow up those first few years! And with each year they grow, there are new things to be aware of around the house.

A few healthy tips from the guide include:
  • Set up small changing stations with baby wipes and diapers in multiple rooms in your house to make diaper changing easier on you… especially if you have multiple floors.
  • Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces in the home – such as doorknobs, light switches and hard toys – with disinfecting wipes to help prevent the spread of germs.
  • If a stuffed toy isn’t machine-washable, put it in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight to help get rid of dust mites.
Try this neat trick: The last page of the guide is a great print-out for moms to post on the fridge or distribute to playgroup members for quick tips.

Roberta Gambarini's new album So In Love

Created - 8/05/2009 1 Comments

Every once in a while, a truly great singer comes along who possesses the beauty, individuality and talent to remind us of the magic and majesty of the human voice: that singer is Roberta Gambarini, celebrated throughout the world by fans, critics and many of the world’s greatest musicians.

With the August 25, 2009 release of ‘SO IN LOVE,’ Roberta Gambarini affirms her status as the “true successor to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae” (Boston Globe) and “the best singer to emerge in over 60 years,” as declared by 2009 GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Mr. Hank Jones.

Mr. Jones, the legendary pianist who accompanied Roberta Gambarini’s 2008 major label debut, ‘You Are There,’ a superb follow-up to Gambarini’s GRAMMY-nominated debut, ‘Easy to Love,’ knows a thing or two about great vocalists – he has accompanied almost all of the most renowned vocalists of the 2oth century such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat “King” Cole, and Billy Eckstine.

Roberta didn’t set out to call the new album ‘So In Love,’ but looking back at the song list after the recording, she realized that the “album is all about love: the love between a man and a woman, the love of song, children, and most of all, the love of life.”

As Roberta explains, she rarely goes into the studio with a “concept,” instead she says that she tries “to let the songs come out of a balance between life experience and reflection,” capturing the music I feel in the moment.”

Joining her in this adventurous journey is a group of “exceptionally talented, sensitive, and sympathetic musicians,” who are long-time supporters, friends, and collaborators of Roberta since her arrival in the States from Torino, Italy: James Moody; Roy Hargrove; Tamir Hendelman; Eric Gunnison; Gerald Clayton; Chuck Berghofer; Neil Swainson; George Mraz; Jake Hanna; Al Foster; Montez Coleman; and Jeff Hamilton.

Recorded by Al Schmitt at the legendary Capitol Studios, with Roberta arranging all but two of the tracks, ‘So In Love’ is dedicated to the loving memory of her dear friends, Johnny Griffin, Ronnie Mathews, and David “Fathead” Newman.

‘SO IN LOVE’ Track List:

1. So In Love (Cole Porter)

2. Day In Day Out (Rube Bloom/Johnny Mercer)

3. Get Out Of Town (Cole Porter)

4. Crazy (Willie Nelson)

5. That Old Black Magic (Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer)

6. Estate (Bruno Martino/Bruno Brighetti)

7. Golden Slumbers / Here, There and Everywhere (Lennon/McCartney)

8. I See Your Face Before Me (Arthur Schwartz/Howard Dietz)

9. From This Moment On (Cole Porter)

10. You Must Believe In Spring (M. Le Grand/J. Demy/A. Bergman/M. Bergman)

11. This Is Always (Harry Warren/Mack Gordon)

12. You Ain't Nothing But a JAMF (Johnny Griffin/lyrics by Roberta Gambarini)

13. Medley from "Cinema Paradiso": Main Theme/For Elena (Ennio Morricone/Andrea Morricone/ English lyrics by A. Stewart)

14. Over the Rainbow (Harold Arlen/E.Y. Harburg)

DVD Review - Echelon Conspiracy

Created - 8/04/2009 1 Comments

Echelon Conspiracy
Starring: Edward Burns, Jonathan Pryce
Director: Greg Marcks Rating: PG-13

Called “a cyberspace thriller for the male action crowd” (The Hollywood Reporter),  Echelon Conspiracy made a debut on DVD and Blu-ray July 21, 2009 from Paramount Entertainment.

Featuring an all-star cast including Shane West (A Walk to Remember), Edward Burns (Saving Private Ryan), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction) and Martin Sheen (The Departed), the movie weaves a story of greed, intrigue and the price of national security. Mysterious cell phone messages promise a young American engineer untold wealth — then make him the target of a deadly international plot. Dangerous security operatives chase the engineer across the globe, while a powerful government official pursues a mysterious agenda that threatens the stability of the entire world.

The Echelon Conspiracy dvd is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround and English, French and Spanish subtitles. The Blu-ray is presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and English, French, Spanish and English SDH subtitles.

My Thoughts - Simply put, I liked it, a lot. But it failed to reach my "keeper" shelf, for the simple reason that all the great suspense that was built up through much of the fast-paced film, comes to an end that's so lackluster as to be a shock. The acting is also nothing to speak of. Only Martin Sheen stood out as the maniacal NSA chief and he is in very few scenes. The devious plot is the only plus point to this film and that makes the movie watchable and even entertaining to an extent.
