Winter's Tail - Review & Giveaway!

Created - 9/28/2009 50 Comments

Congrats to lucky winner - Karen!

As a lifelong bookworm, I'm always on lookout for the next great read. And when it comes to books for kids, Scholastic always has a great selection! Today I have the pleasure of introducing to you one of their latest - Winter's Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned To Swim Again (Ages 4+), the heartwarming and inspirational tale of a Dolphin who learnt to swim again -- with a prosthetic tail!

Synopsis – When Winter, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, was just three months old, she was rescued from a crab trap off the coast of Florida, and her tail was seriously damaged. Winter was rushed to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine animal hospital. It wasn't clear that she would survive. She did, but eventually the tail fell off and Winter compensated by swimming more like a fish than a dolphin which was seriously damaging her spine. But for the last year, Winter has been learning how to use a prosthetic tail. The idea came from a company that makes prosthetics for humans. It was very challenging but Winter is thriving and using her new tail with great command.

The word has gotten out about Winter. Visitors are traveling in droves to Clearwater to visit Winter who has become an inspiration to adults and children alike, especially to children who are amputees themselves. The tale doesn't end there. The special technology used for Winter's prosthetic tail is being used to develop prosthetics for Iraq war veterans who have especially sensitive injuries!

Winter lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. For more information, visit http://www.scholastic.com/winterstail/. You and your family can meet Winter the Dolphin at Winter’s Tail Virtual Field Trip. Watch the Webcast Live! Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 1:00 P.M. – 1:45 P.M. (ET)

Check out Winter and her amazing new tail in this video below.

ImagiPLAY Toys - Review & Giveaway

Created - 9/24/2009 45 Comments

Congrats to lucky winner - Sylvia

imagiplay

These are the times when electronic toys and games are the vogue. And yet, I wish for the simpler times of my childhood when such things were available and yet not dominant in a child's toybox. For fun, educational toys with high-quality (and without batteries), ImagiPLAY is a great place to visit.
For over a decade, ImagiPLAY has created high-quality educational toys that inspire children's imaginations and the desire to explore. With the abundance of toys available for children today, ImagiPLAY sets itself apart from the rest through its motto: "Toys with Integrity." By producing quality products that connect with nature, have eco-friendly sources, and hold educational value, ImagiPLAY works to benefit the earth we share and the people that inhabit it.
I had the pleasure of reviewing their Counting Bunnies number puzzle last year. This year, they sent me the Spinning Tops from their Global Games selection. Spinning tops originated independently in cultures across the globe and continue to fascinate kids and adults alike. They also have the added benefit of helping develop valuable motor skills and coordination.

toysThis classic toy comes complete with 8 colorful spinning tops packed inside a wooden box with convertible lid and spinning stage. And it includes the rules to Bambaram, a game popular amoung Indian youth. It's made from plantation grown rubberwood, an earth-friendly hardwood and has a Pinewood storage box.

It's meant for ages 4+, but we're all having fun with it at our home. So many spinning tops mean we all get to join in and it's fun to battle it out to see whose tops spins the longest or the fastest and even, who knocks the most tops out of the arena! The bright colors, the convenient storage box and the whole fresh quality of this toy makes it a winner in my book. Whether you're in the mood for some good old fun or just want to keep the kids occupied and entertained on a rainy/wintry afternoon, Spinning Tops from ImagiPLAY are the perfect choice.

From eco-friendly toys to puzzles, playsets, building blocks and more, ImagiPLAY has something for every kid. So be sure to visit them this holiday season! For more information, visit http://www.imagiplay.com/

ImagiPLAY is offering a 20% discount from their website to readers of this blog. Just use the coupon code integrity09 when checking out. The coupon code is valid for 30 days.

Home Design Tips

Created - 9/23/2009 5 Comments

If you have big design dreams but are working with a small budget, no fear – you don't have to sacrifice style and professional-looking results.  Try these budget-friendly decorating tips from designer and contractor Amy Matthews of the DIY Network’s “Sweat Equity” and “Bathroom Renovations” to help get you the priceless design you’ve always wanted without breaking the bank.
  • Shed a little light: Give your kitchen an instant and inexpensive makeover simply by replacing outdated fixtures like faucets, lighting and hardware. You can also add a tile backsplash or under-cabinet lights to really dress up your kitchen.  Not only are these functional and design-oriented, they really help deliver a big bang for your buck.
  • A little dab will do: Before you commit to a paint color, buy samples and try them out on the wall. See how the color looks during the day, at night and under various types of lighting. Also, be sure to have painter’s tape on hand, such as Scotch-Blue Painter’s Tape for Delicate Surfaces. Whether you’re painting one accent wall or tackling the whole house, masking trim, baseboards, and other areas with painter’s tape lets you avoid a mess and achieve clean, sharp paint lines.
  • Something old, something new:  Add one special piece in the living room that makes a great conversation starter. This could be a lighting fixture, a piece of furniture or a unique rug – something signature to your style. You can find great pieces by shopping at designer sales and discount showrooms, or uncover treasures in your own house. Rummage through the attic or basement to rediscover pictures, vases or your grandmother’s antique chest. You’ll be surprised with what you may find.
  • Accent on accessories: Fancy towels aren’t just for your guests’ bathroom – treat yourself to new towels in the master bathroom and quickly transform it into an updated and inviting space. For your living spaces, changing couch covers seasonally will keep your décor fresh and make it look like you purchased new furniture. Try brown microfiber for fall, white linen for summer and sage green in the spring.
  • Bring the outdoors in: Take a hint from nature and get inspired by the seasons and the beautiful hues outside. Once you’ve decided on one or two colors, buy pillows, lampshades and other accessories to place throughout your bedroom. Experiment with patterns, warm colors like red and orange, or calm hues like moss greens and sage. Branches and flowers are inexpensive and can also add instant charm to any living area.
  • Soak up the sun: When landscaping, buy smaller and younger plants that need time to grow.  They’ll be ready in a couple of years when you’re ready to sell your house. Fresh cedar mulch or rock landscaping are other great ways to improve curb appeal – they’re inexpensive and will really make your yard pop.

Back to School - Tips to Minimize Allergies

Created - 9/22/2009 2 Comments

What do you think is one of the most challenging – and perhaps unexpected -- health issues for school children this fall?

  1. Sleep deprivation
  2. Allergies
  3. Lack of concentration
The answer is B – Allergies. More than 40% of children suffer from allergies, which can make it hard to concentrate on school work, tough to participate in school sports and difficult to get a good night’s sleep.

But, there are some easy ways to minimize allergens this back-to-school season. Here are simple suggestions that start at home so you help send your kids off to school with fewer symptoms and reduce the allergens they trek back into the house:
  • Get a head start. Wash the body, but especially the hair, as a nightly ritual so kids rinse away allergens gathered during the day.
  • Outsmart the symptoms. Get ahead of allergy discomfort by talking to your pharmacist about solutions that can last through the school day and night. There are many different choices for Parents and Children’s ZYRTEC Perfect Measure just introduced the only allergy medicine dosed in pre-filled spoons of sugar-free, dye-free allergy medicine that offer relief for 24 hours for kids six years and older.
  • Wash, Rinse, Dry. There’s new technology that will now let you send your kids to school with virtually allergen-free clothes. The Maytag Bravos Washer and Dryer remove up to 95% of allergens, so your family can start the day off with even cleaner clothes.
  • Tour the school. You probably know the triggers in and around your home. Walk through the school and talk to the school nurse to identify potential allergy triggers or learn how the school monitors air quality.

Photobucket
I was sent their Logan boots to try out. And the moss green suede and gray leather boot are just perfect for my little explorer! While the red stitching and faux laces add a pleasing shot of color. So far we've been to a night concert in the park where my son ran about in these boots and to various other daytime explorations around the neighborhood. And he's never once complained about them or tried to take them off as he does when he finds a pair of shoes to be uncomfortable. We're really looking forward to him going about in them, all warm and comfy, in the coming Winter season.

Features of the Logan boots include:
  • Handcrafted from butter-soft leather
  • Flexible rubber sole – healthy for developing feet but sturdy enough for outdoor play!
  • Generous width and wide toe box for plenty of wiggle room!
  • Padded collars for extra comfort
  • Adjustable Velcro closures make shoes easy to get on and ensure a great fit
  • Breathable leather insole and lining

Some of the other ones to appeal to me from their new Fall line are :

Check them out yourself at www.seekairun.com and you'll become their fan as well!

Fall Pick - Durham County on ION TV

Created - 9/16/2009 1 Comments

What you don’t know about your neighbors could kill you.

That’s just everyday reality in “ Durham County,” an eerie combination of suspense and family drama that premiered on ION Television Monday, September 7 at 10:00p.m.

“Durham County” follows the troubled world of Homicide Detective Mike Sweeney (Hugh Dillon, CBS' "Flashpoint") who moves his family to quiet suburbia for a fresh start after his partner is killed and his wife Audrey(Helene Joy)is diagnosed with breast cancer. While Durham County seems like the perfect place to begin again, Sweeney soon discovers that his neighbor Ray Prager may be a serial killer.

Keep Kids Cool with Frubi Shades

Created - 9/16/2009 2 Comments

Photobucket

These days when you go outside, you automatically slide on Sunglasses. After all, who isn't worried about harmful sun rays and their devastating impact on eyes?! This goes double for our little ones. Trouble is, kids don't often realize this. As such Kids and Sunglasses don't mix well. Either the shades are too big for the baby or slide off the non-existent nose of your child. Or else they break/scratch easily when in the curious but determined hands of a toddler. Those that do survive are often lost as a kid's interest drifts or they jump and play around - which they do a lot! The solution lies in award-winning, ophthalmologist designed and tested, FRUBI Children's Sunglasses.

 Photobucket

Why I LOVE them:
  • The soft, comfortable (and spongy) material is formed in one piece so there are no hinges, small parts or hard surfaces to hurt them. Or for that matter, break apart, like when my toddler threw them against the wall! They just bounced off, fell on the tile floor and amazingly, are still very much intact, unbroken and in one piece! It's the only one to survive his hands so far - yay!
  • They're especially molded to fit a child’s face, unlike small-sized adult sunglasses which just slide right off of a kid's tiny nose.
  • And they come with a fully adjustable band fits snugly and closes with velco. So I can use it for the baby or my toddler!
  • They can just hang loosely around a kid's neck and still not be lost!
  • They have large side panels and soft temple pads to provide max coverage and comfortable wraparound fit.
  • This also means, you need have no worries about your kid falling down and getting hurt from the frame breaking.
  • Polycarbonate lens blocks 100% UV and damaging blue light. So no more squinting in the sun!
  • Available in 16 great colors and prints!
  • Best of all, my kids really love them!
  • And they're quite affordable at $9.99!
I'm very happy with my children's Frubi Shades and feel comfortable not only using them on my kids but also recommending them to other parents who're looking for some fun, fashionable, affordable and most importantly, durable shades for their little ones!

For more information and to view their various styles/colors, please visit http://www.frubishades.com/.

Fall Pick - Three Rivers by CBS

Created - 9/15/2009 1 Comments

A few days back, I wrote about the upcoming CBS show, The Good Wife. That was the story of a Mom going back to the workplace after her husband's sex scandal. Today I bring you another promising show, again by CBS. It's called THREE RIVERS.

Show Synopsis

THREE RIVERS is a medical drama that goes inside the emotionally complex lives of organ donors, the recipients and the surgeons at the preeminent transplant hospital in the country where every moment counts. However, dealing with donor families in their darkest hour and managing the fears and concerns of apprehensive recipients takes much more than just a sharp scalpel.

Leading the elite team is Dr. Andy Yablonski (Alex O'Loughlin), the highly-skilled workaholic lead organ transplant surgeon, whose good-natured personality and sarcastic wit makes him popular with his patients and colleagues. His colleagues include Dr. Miranda Foster (Katherine Moennig), a surgical fellow with a rebellious streak and fiery temper who strives to live up to her deceased father's excellent surgical reputation; Dr. David Lee (Daniel Henney), a womanizing surgical resident who's broken as many hearts as he's replaced; Ryan Abbott (Christopher J. Hanke), the inexperienced new transplant coordinator who arranges the intricately choreographed process of quickly and carefully transporting organs from donor to patient; Dr. Sophia Jordan, the head of surgery and a dedicated medical professional; and Pam Acosta (Justina Machado), Andy's no-nonsense operating assistant and best friend.

In this high stakes arena, in which every case is a race against the clock, these tenacious surgeons and medical professionals are the last hope for their patients.

Did this show make your short list? What other shows are you looking forward to?

Nimli offers clothing, accessories, home décor, beauty products and much more from independent designers who combine their effortless creativity with environmentally conscious ethics. I was sent one of their best selling Azuri Cashmere Pashmina Shawl (it comes in an incredible 110 colors! Pictured above) in Mahogany for review. And I've been using it for a week now and there are a lot of things I love about it.

Details : It's made out of 70% Pashmina and 30% Silk. 72" length x 22" width with Fringed ends.
And in case you were wondering, Wikipedia tells me that Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool and the textiles made from it.

Pros
  • Expertly woven with only the finest Pashmina & Silk, this Pashmina Shawl can be used all year and for any occasion.
  • The natural qualities of the Pashmina & Silk provide warmth, softness and durability while also adding elegance and beauty.
  • It keeps me looking stylish even when paired with the most ordinary clothes.
  • It's timeless and versatile and can be used as a wrap, shawl or scarf.
  • I especially love the fringe. An added and unexpected benefit is that my baby loves to play with the fringe and in the absence of a toy, it keeps her well-entertained!
  • The fabric is really silky and feels great against skin.
  • The price ($34) is quite affordable.
Cons
  • While the length of the shawl 72" is perfect, let's face it - I'm not a skinny model and personally found the 22" width to be a bit on the smaller side when used as a shawl.
  • It can only be Dry Cleaned.

Outdoor Fun with Discover the Forest

Created - 9/13/2009 1 Comments

Have you observed how kids today spend more times indoors with their computer, Wii and what not, than we ever did? In fact, according to the Ad Council, the time U.S. children spend outdoors has declined 50% in the past 20 years! Research shows, that children who play outside: play more creatively; have lower stress levels; have more active imaginations; become fitter and leaner; develop stronger immune systems; have greater respect for themselves, for others, and for the environment.

The U.S. Forest Service is hoping to change this startling statistic through a PSA campaign entitled “Where the Other You Lives” with the aim to encourage today’s youth (specifically tweens aged 8-12) and their parents to re-connect with nature by experiencing it first-hand.

Discover what this campaign is all about by visiting - http://www.discovertheforest.org/. It's intended to raise awareness about the benefits of spending time in nature by allowing children to explore, use their imagination and discover new wildlife. Being in nature frees them from their crazy, scheduled days and offers the ability to get lost in something totally unmanaged, unexpected and utterly surprising. And with a healthy and curious relationship with nature, our children are more likely to feel responsible for its well-being.

Atkins Cuisine line

Created - 9/12/2009 0 Comments

As a Mom with 2 young kids who need me constantly, I don't have a lot of free time, be it time to exercise, time to eat well or in general, time to look after myself. But thanks to Atkins, I can now indulge myself and yet eat healthy.
PhotobucketPhotobucket

Atkins has come to the rescue of Moms like me with their Cuisine line, launching two new staples to help us eat a greater variety of our favorite foods. Atkins' new All Purpose Baking Mix and Penne Pasta come packed with fiber, are low in sugar, and, of course, fit perfectly into a low-carb lifestyle.  Plus, they make cooking and baking easy.

We enjoyed this past Labor day weekend with Atkins, beginning with some delicious Pancakes topped with fresh strawberries. And then continued the trend, with Penne Pasta with baby tomatoes, olives and roasted garlic - yummy!

To celebrate the launch of these new products, Atkins has announced an online recipe contest where you can share your own recipe featuring the All Purpose Baking Mix or Penne Pasta and win great prizes.  Recipes can be submitted to www.Atkins.com by September 30, 2009. Information about the recipe contest is now live and available through the following link:  http://community.atkins.com/recipe_contest/?mcid=PRRecipeContest

Kenmore “Crazy Cleaning Confessions” contest

Created - 9/11/2009 1 Comments

busy mom,crazy mom,multitasking mom,mom
Agatha Christie, the creator of Poirot and other inimitable novels once said "The best time for planning a book is while you're doing the dishes." All I can say is, 'wow' and 'fat chance' Ms.Christie!

I do the dishes daily (whether I want to or not!), along with many other household chores and still haven't written my dream novel. That's because my mind is always filled to the brim thinking of which other chaotic mess to handle next - the stains on my children's clothes, the pen marks on the walls, the spilled soil on my patio, the paint job ... The List never, ever ends. But in the end, I somehow manage to get them all done, sooner or later (later usually!). My confession - when I'm for those middle of the night feedings and can't sleep, I sometimes get on my knees and scrub those floors away.... At 2 AM.... In my nightdress... While the rest of my family sleeps! Yep - certifiably crazy!

How about you, dear readers? Got any "crazy cleaning confessions" to make?
Do it in the form of a short 90 seconds video describing your extreme cleaning measures, and enter-to-win a new washer/dryer or dishwasher from Kenmore in their Crazy Cleaning Confessions Contest! The crazier the confession, the better! Finalists will be selected from September 7-10 and beginning September 11, fans can vote for their favorite confession and help three lucky finalists win brand new appliances. The rules and entry dates for the contest can be found at the Kenmore website.

Not only that, but Kenmore will donate $5.00 for each video submission and $.50 for each vote cast to the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots program. So, even if you don't submit a video, mark your calendars and start voting on September 11th so you can help a great cause (and, watch some fun videos).

Shows coming this fall & winter:

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Over The Top, an all-new live entertainment extravaganza featuring the ultimate tug of war between Ringmaster Chuck Wagner and clown eccentric Tom Dougherty over a magical top hat that controls the circus. When the Ringmaster dons the hat he conjures stupendous spectacles for his circus, like the stunt riding Royal Cossack Cavalry while the clown uses the hat to summon silly and whimsical acts for his circus, such as a cavalry of goats riding on ponies in a Barnyard Bonanza. They continue to top one another until the Ringmaster and clown realize that the magic of the circus is not in the hat but in the hearts of everyone. The show culminates in an amazing display of gigantic glowing rainforest flowers surrounding Chinese acrobats swinging on vines and propelling through the air. Over the Top is two circuses in one providing excitement for the whole family.

Audiences will see nearly 100 animals including flying dogs, Asian elephants that skip, hop, and groove, miniature horses, llamas, pigs, and even a performing porcupine. In a daring feat, the courageous Daniel Raffo stands eye to eye with a pack of powerful Bengal tigers. Circus celebrities help rev-up the motorcycle madness featuring one cycle on a high wire and seven speeding riders in a Globe of Steel. Extraordinary aerial acts fill the arena sky with a rare double-decker trapeze and the Bombastic Bouncers who combine gigantic inner tubes and awe-inspiring acrobatics in a high-energy performance never before seen in America. And with the audience's participation, this circus really goes Over The Top!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®: Through the mystery of magic and the mastery of skill, audiences will be spellbound as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®, a thrill-filled, mind-blowing circus spectacular where family fun is no illusion.

Magical Zingmaster Alex and his assistant, the alluring Levitytia, lead audiences through a kaleidoscope of color and imagery revealing extraordinary worlds of fantasy, flight and phenomena that celebrates the uplifting spirit of the circus and wards off a cynical Mr. Gravity and his team of "heavies" who try to bring everyone down.

Be mesmerized when a four-ton elephant disappears before your eyes, and a gravity-inducing nemesis transforms across species into a ferocious tiger. Stand in awe as a dazzling trapeze artist performs a perilous, anatomically unimaginable one-arm speed-spin high atop the arena floor, and two formidable, female human cannonballs are blasted through the air in a daring, awe-inspiring display of bravery. Become electrified as the dangerous double wheel of steel, the gasp-inducing high wire and soaring gigantic swings defy both gravity and logic.

Fun-filled magic merges with traditional circus arts to create a world of infinite possibilities where apprentice illusionists levitate their parents with a wave of a wand, and audience spirits keep rising as the high flying circus is (literally) turned upside down. Perhaps the most magical of all, watch in amazement as an incomparable array of exotic animals including a herd of majestic Asian elephants, magnificent Bengal tigers and elegant Arabian and Friesian horses join forces with our human performers to create an experience that will surprise and delight Children of All Ages, rendering us speechless and reminding us that the magic of The Greatest Show On Earth® lives forever in our hearts and imaginations.

To learn more about Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey shows touring the country this year and to find shows in your area, visit the Ringling site.  And don't forget to use the special discount code when purchasing tickets online!

With schools in full swing, take a welcome break by going to view one of Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey's edge-of-your-seat entertainment for the entire family. After all, there's a little kid in each of us, right?!
