Tips to Bust Summertime Boredom

School is out and children are so excited that summer is here, but it won't be long until you hear the infamous, "I'm bored" from your little ones.

Primrose Schools, the leader in educational child care, recommends encouraging imaginative play and having a plan in place to keep children's minds engaged during the summer months. Studies show that without stimulation, children can lose up to 60 percent of what they learned during the school year. That's why Dr. Mary Zurn, Vice President of Education for Primrose, has come up with the list of ideas below as a starting point for summer activities that offer a balance between the freedom of child-initiated play time and more structured activities.

Here are 11 ideas parents can use to keep young minds active during the summer months:

1. Boredom Buster Jar: At the beginning of the summer, sit down with your family and brainstorm a list of activities that can be done alone or that you can enjoy doing together. Encourage your children to share their own ideas and help you decorate and label a simple jar as the family "Boredom Buster Jar." They'll feel more involved in the project and more likely to think this is a "neat" idea, if they participate in the creation and idea generation. Next, write everyone's ideas down on slips of paper and as a group decide which ones should go in the jar. Anyone in the family can pull any idea out of the jar to fight the summertime boredom blues.

2. Stories Alive: It sounds too simple, but reading is one of the most important waysto keep young minds engaged during the summer.Make reading even more fun by finding ways to bring the stories to life. For example, in the book Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, children create a make-believe town in the desert out of rocks, boxes, and their imaginations. Read the book with your children and then challenge them to create their own town with materials they find in the backyard.

3. Art Start Box: You'll need to gather basic art supplies-child safe scissors, glue, markers, tape and construction paper. Put them in a special box along with empty oatmeal boxes and paper towel rolls, colorful magazines and bits of aluminum foil. Occasionally add a special surprise like chalk, stickers, or stamp pads so there's always something new for the children to find. Even if you normally have these supplies around the house, it's fun for children to know that the Art Start Box is just for them. They'll probably have some good ideas of other household items that can be recycled to fuel their creative energies.

4. Family Performances:
Break out old clothes or costumes and encourage children to make up characters and create a play to act out. They are the directors, actors, and producers. They can also make musical instruments out of pots/pans, wooden spoons, empty canisters and have a parade; or everyone can play along to your family's favorite songs. Record or video the performances, and enjoy the replay. You'll also be capturing a bit of family history everyone will enjoy for years to come.

5. Family Dance Party:
Crank up the music and encourage your entire family to boogie down. Dancing gives children a great outlet for self-expression through their own motion and helps build self-esteem. It also enhances motor and coordination development by incorporating skills like jumping, landing and leaping. Dancing is a great activity that can involve the whole family and doesn't take very much preparation.

6. Fort Building: Children love to build all kinds of structures--from small towns to large towers. Constructing forts or tents is an activity that can keep children focused and problem solving for hours. All the items you need can be found around the house- some chairs, cushions, blankets, and of course adult supervision.

7. Cookbook Fun: Have you ever shared your favorite cookbook with your children? Take it out and ask your children to choose a recipe to try. Measuring can be a fun and easy way to keep math skills fresh.

8. Summer Scrapbook: All you need for this project is a spiral notebook. Encourage everyone in the family to draw pictures of favorite activities and collect mementos from special events throughout the summer. Children love to go back through scrapbooks and albums and tell about what happened at each occasion. They will also be building their storytelling skills at the same time.

9. Listening Game:
Lie down in the backyard, in the den or at the park and listen. What do you hear? Do you hear what I hear? Can you imitate the sound? This is similar to watching the clouds and naming the shapes, and it encourages everyone to slow down and focus on listening.

10. Camping Out: Pretend to campout in the backyard. Plan a meal, pack a backpack and set up a campsite. You might even decide to spend the night!

11. Scavenger Hunt:
Make a list or picture cards of common household items and have your children find the items on the list. Invite friends or neighbors to join in the fun to make it a competition.

Heart and Soul from Kenny G!

Ever since I first heard Kenny G's soulful notes on a saxophone, I've been an ardent fan. Although running around 2 young kids leaves me with very little to sit down, relax and lose myself in his music, I was still excited to learn this Multi-platinum selling, Grammy-winning recording artist is releasing his 13th studio album entitled Heart and Soul on this June 29 on Concord Records!

Heart and SoulKenny and renowned studio master Walter Afanasieff have produced and arranged the album, the follow-up to 2008’s Latin jazz collection Rhythm and Romance. Heart and Soul returns Kenny to his R&B roots including tracks with guest artists Robin Thicke and Babyface.

Fans will recognize Kenny signature style on the sensual "Fall Again," featuring R&B crooner Robin Thicke, the album's first single. Commenting on the collaboration with Thicke whom he’s known since Robin was a teenager, Kenny said, “His voice is so emotional and soulful, the combination of his voice and my saxophone really hits the perfect tones for my new album.”

Track listing is as follows:
  1. Heart And Soul
  2. Déjà Vu
  3. Fall Again – featuring Robin Thicke
  4. Letters From Home
  5. The Promise
  6. No Place Like Home – featuring Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds
  7. My Devotion
  8. G-Walkin’
  9. Sunrise
  10. One Breath
  11. Encore
  12. After Hours
Bonus Tracks
  1. Slow Motion
  2. Renaissance
A little different from the romantic kind of music I've come to expect from this genius artist, the music is still alluring and well worth listening to. The slow beats, the crooning voice, the whole musical dreamboat is a joy to hear. I just hope one day when the kids take a long nap, I'll get to hear it all in one go and get the full experience.

DVD - Starstruck (Extended Edition)

Starstruck: Got to Believe Extended Edition DVDStarstruck: Got to Believe, a music and adventure-filled romp that hits all the right notes for kids and tweens, tells the story of Jessica Olson (Danielle Campbell, Prison Break) and her older sister Sara (Maggie Castle, Time Traveler’s Wife), who are heading to Hollywood from Kalamazoo, Michigan, on a family trip to visit their grandmother.

Sara is obsessed with pop star Christopher Wilde (Sterling Knight, Sonny with a Chance) and hopes to track him down while in California, but Jessica could care less about the stuck-up star and would rather go sightseeing. When the sisters arrive in L.A. Sara takes Jessica on a hunt to find Christopher and a chance meeting with the star sets off a series of comic adventures that feature many of L.A.’s landmark locations.

As the sisters sightsee and spend time together, Jessica gets to know the real Christopher and soon their friendship grows. Ultimately Christopher must decide what is more important -- being himself or becoming a movie star. Disney Channel stars Brandon Mychal Smith (Sonny With a Chance) and Chelsea Staub (JONAS) also star as Christopher’s loyal best friend and fame- hungry girlfriend, respectively.

The ‘out of this world’ bonuses featured on the Starstruck: Extended Edition DVD include:
    •    Extended version of the movie - only available on DVD
    •    More Music with eight Rock-Along tracks to sing-along with!
    •    Three Hot Music Videos

StarStruck was #1 in its time slot among kids ages 6-11 and tweens ages 9-14, and was the most watched February original movie premiere in total viewers. StarStruck: The Extended Edition DVD is the only way to get the exclusive content not aired on TV.

What I liked is that although a modern day Cinderella story, StarStruck promotes strong messages about honesty, humility, self-acceptance, and strength of character. A nice, fun, summer dvd to watch for the whole family.

Check out - $5 A DAY

$5 a DayNat (Christopher Walken, Oscar® winner, The Deer Hunter) is an eccentric conman – a hustler content with a life of schemes and underhanded deals. He lacks one thing: a reconciliation with his son, Flynn (Alessandro Nivola, Jurassic Park III), who has ceased trusting his father long ago. But Nat’s time is growing short: he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. True to form, Nat cons Flynn into joining him in a cross country journey to an experimental medical facility. Short on money, but not on imagination, the two realize that to reach their destination they can spend no more than $5 A Day. They come up with increasingly ridiculous schemes to keep within their budget - but there is a distance of emotion as well as miles to cover. Are they on the path towards a father-son reunion?

With a sparkling cast that includes Sharon Stone (Emmy® award winner, “The Practice”, Casino), Amanda Peet (Syriana, 2012), Peter Coyote (Erin Brokovich, “Deadwood”) and Dean Cain (Out of Time, Rat Race), $5 A Day is a comedy rich in character and charm. It is a happy reminder that relationships may take their toll, but what we get in return is priceless.

This movie will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 24th. And here's the trailer premiere for $5 A DAY :

Personally speaking, my family and I kept cool and had an awesome visual experience indoors as the hot sun beat down mercilessly outside. It's already become a repeat request from my son even though he's too young to understand what it's all about. In his own words, he just can't enough of "the blue people" and the action sequences continue to hold him (and indeed all of us!) spellbound. A great buy, without question!
